What do Muslims actually do on Eid?

Yes, there's a simple pattern most Muslims follow on Eid. They wake early, wash and dress in their best clothes, go to a special morning prayer, then spend the day visiting family and friends, eating good food and giving gifts and charity. The details change from country to country, but the heart of the day is gratitude to Allah and joy with people.

The morning: getting ready and going to prayer

Eid starts early. Most Muslims take a full shower (ghusl), put on clean or new clothes and a bit of perfume (for men), and head out to the Eid prayer, usually held in a mosque, a park, a sports hall or a rented convention center.

  • Eid al-Fitr: people eat something sweet before leaving. The Prophet ﷺ never went out on the morning of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates, and he ate an odd number of them (Sahih al-Bukhari 953).
  • Zakat al-fitr: a small food charity is paid before the prayer so poor families can celebrate too (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503). See What is zakat al-fitr?
  • On the way: people say the Eid takbir ("Allahu akbar...") out loud or quietly.

The prayer itself

The Eid prayer is two short units (rak'at) with a few extra "Allahu akbar"s, followed by a short sermon. There's no call to prayer. It usually lasts 20 to 40 minutes, and afterwards everyone hugs, shakes hands and says "Eid Mubarak". See How do I pray the Eid prayer?

A small sunnah many people enjoy: going home by a different route. The Prophet ﷺ used to return from the Eid prayer by a different way from the one he came (Sahih al-Bukhari 986).

The rest of the day

  • Food: big breakfasts or lunches with family. On Eid al-Adha, many families cook meat from their sacrifice (qurbani).
  • Visiting: people go from house to house, visit relatives and call those far away.
  • Gifts and "Eidi": children often get money or presents.
  • Fun: trips to parks, fairs, bowling or a restaurant are common, especially in the West.

Fasting is not allowed on the day of Eid itself, which tells you how much Islam wants this to be a day of enjoyment (Sahih al-Bukhari 1990).

Why it matters

When the Prophet ﷺ came to Medina, people had two days of games from pre-Islamic times, and he said Allah had replaced them with something better: the day of sacrifice and the day of breaking the fast (Sunan Abi Dawud 1134). So Eid is worship and celebration at the same time.

وَلِتُكْمِلُوا۟ ٱلْعِدَّةَ وَلِتُكَبِّرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا هَدَىٰكُمْ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ "and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful." Quran 2:185

If you're curious and not Muslim, you're usually very welcome to join the meal and the visiting. See Can I celebrate Eid if I'm not Muslim?
