What does "Alif Lam Mim" mean in the Quran?

"Alif Lam Mim" are three Arabic letters (A, L, M) that open six surahs, and their exact meaning is known only to Allah, according to many scholars. They belong to a group called the "disconnected letters" (al-huruf al-muqatta'at). Scholars have offered thoughtful explanations, but none is certain, and that's fine.
What are the "disconnected letters"?
Twenty-nine surahs begin with single letters read out by name, not as a word. "Alif Lam Mim" starts al-Baqarah, Al Imran, al-Ankabut, ar-Rum, Luqman and as-Sajdah. Others include "Ya Sin," "Ta Ha," "Ha Mim," "Sad," "Qaf" and "Nun." In total, 14 different letters of the 28-letter Arabic alphabet appear in these openings. You recite them by their letter names: "Alif-Laaam-Miiim," with the long stretches marked in the mushaf.
What scholars have said
- Allah knows best. Many early scholars, including companions and successors, held that these letters are among the secrets of the Quran and didn't try to define them. This is the safest and most widely held position.
- A challenge. Scholars such as Ibn Kathir pointed out that the Quran is made of the very same letters Arabs used every day, yet nobody could produce anything like it. The letters are often followed directly by a mention of the Book, as in "Alif Lam Mim. This is the Book about which there is no doubt" (2:1–2).
- Names of surahs. Some said they act as titles. Ta Ha and Ya Sin are even used as surah names.
- Attention-getters. Unusual openings make listeners stop and pay attention.
Claims that these letters hide secret codes, numbers or predictions have no reliable basis, so be careful with such videos.
It's fine not to know everything
The Quran itself says some verses are clear and some are not fully explained to us:
The verse goes on to praise those firm in knowledge who say, "We believe in it; all of it is from our Lord." Not knowing something is part of humility, not a weakness in faith. See What should I do if a Quran verse feels harsh or confusing?
You still get rewarded for reciting them
The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever reads a letter of Allah's Book gets a good deed, multiplied tenfold, and added: "I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is one letter; rather Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2910). So even these mysterious letters bring reward. See Is reciting the Quran rewarded if I don't understand it?
- Alif Lam Mim are letters that open six surahs.
- 29 surahs start with such "disconnected letters."
- Many scholars say their full meaning is with Allah alone.
- Each letter you recite earns reward (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2910).
