What does "Allahu Akbar" mean outside of prayer?

Yes, it means the same thing everywhere: "Allah is greater." Outside of prayer, Muslims say "Allahu Akbar" when they're amazed, happy, climbing up somewhere high, celebrating Eid, or simply remembering Allah. It's a phrase of praise and wonder, not a battle cry.

What "Allahu Akbar" really means

"Allahu Akbar" is usually translated "God is great," but a closer meaning is "Allah is greater." Greater than what? Greater than anything: your worries, your plans, the mountain in front of you, the problem keeping you up at night. That's why it opens every prayer and is repeated so often in it.

Arabic-speaking Christians also call God "Allah," so the word itself isn't strange or foreign. It's simply Arabic for God. See Do Muslims and Christians believe in the same God?

When Muslims say it outside prayer

  • Going up a hill, stairs or a plane taking off: the Companion Jabir said, "Whenever we went up a place we would say, 'Allahu Akbar'," and when going down they said "Subhan Allah" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2993).
  • Joy and amazement: when the Prophet ﷺ told his Companions he hoped they'd be a large share of the people of Paradise, they shouted "Allahu Akbar!" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3348). Many Muslims say it when they hear wonderful news.
  • Eid: Muslims repeat takbir (saying Allahu Akbar) on the way to Eid prayer. The Quran links the end of Ramadan with this: "and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you" (Quran 2:185).
  • After prayer: 33 times, together with SubhanAllah and Alhamdulillah (Sahih Muslim 597).
  • Sacrifice: when slaughtering, the Prophet ﷺ mentioned Allah's name and "said Takbir" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5565).
  • Answering the adhan: when the caller says it, you repeat it (Sahih Muslim 385).

A beloved phrase in daily dhikr

The Prophet ﷺ said the dearest phrases to Allah are four: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illa-Allah and Allahu Akbar, and "There is no harm for you in which of them begin with" (Sahih Muslim 2137). He also said saying them "is dearer to me than anything over which the sun rises" (Sahih Muslim 2695). See What does "SubhanAllah" mean and when do I say it?

You don't need to shout it. When people on a journey raised their voices with takbir, the Prophet ﷺ told them "you are not calling a deaf or an absent person" (Sahih al-Bukhari 7386). A calm, quiet "Allahu Akbar" is perfect.

What about the news headlines?

Some people in Europe and the US only know the phrase from violent news stories, and that's painful for Muslims. Those few cases twist a phrase that hundreds of millions of people say peacefully every day while praying, hiking, or hearing that a baby was born. If a coworker or relative asks about it, a simple explanation usually helps: "It means God is greater. I say it when I'm grateful or amazed."

وَكَبِّرْهُ تَكْبِيرًۢا "and glorify Him with [great] glorification." Quran 17:111
