What does hijabi mean?

"Hijabi" is an informal word for a Muslim woman who wears the hijab (headscarf). It comes from the Arabic word hijab plus an "-i" ending, and it's used mostly in English-speaking Muslim communities and on social media, as in "she's a hijabi" or "hijabi fashion."
Where the word comes from
Hijab in Arabic means a barrier, screen or covering. In the Quran it often means a curtain or partition, for example in Quran 33:53, where men are told to speak to the Prophet's ﷺ wives "from behind a hijab." Over time, Muslims began using "hijab" for a woman's modest dress, and especially her headscarf. The Quran itself calls the headscarf a khimar:
"Hijabi" isn't a classical Arabic term. It's modern English slang, a bit like "gymgoer" or "foodie," that Muslims created to describe themselves. See Is hijab mandatory in Islam?
How people use it
- As a description: "My sister became a hijabi last year."
- In fashion and social media: "hijabi outfits," "hijabi influencer," "hijabi-friendly swimwear."
- Related words: a niqabi wears a face veil (niqab). Some people say "non-hijabi" for a Muslim woman who doesn't cover her hair.
Hijab is more than a scarf, though. Scholars describe it as a whole way of dressing and behaving modestly. See What does hijab actually cover?
Is it a respectful word?
Yes. Most Muslim women who wear hijab use "hijabi" about themselves happily, and it's fine for non-Muslims to use it in a friendly way. Just avoid using "hijabi" vs "non-hijabi" to rank women's faith. A woman's iman isn't measured by a single piece of cloth, and many sisters are on their own journey toward wearing it.
Can a non-Muslim be a hijabi?
The word normally means a Muslim woman who wears hijab as worship. A non-Muslim woman can still try wearing a headscarf, for example on World Hijab Day or out of curiosity, and that's welcome. See Can I wear a hijab if I'm not Muslim?
