Islam does not accept Wicca as a valid path, because it involves worshipping deities besides Allah and practising magic, both of which Islam forbids. Muslims can still be kind and respectful to Wiccan friends, and Islam shares Wicca's love of nature in its own way.

What is Wicca?

Wicca is a modern pagan religion that took shape in England in the 1950s, popularised by Gerald Gardner. Many Wiccans honour a Goddess and a God, follow a "Wheel of the Year" of seasonal festivals such as Samhain, Yule and Beltane, cast spells and circles, and follow the Wiccan Rede, "An it harm none, do what ye will". It has grown fast in the UK and USA, partly through social media.

Worship belongs to Allah alone

The heart of Islam is tawhid: worshipping only the one Creator. Every Muslim repeats this in every prayer:

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ "It is You we worship and You we ask for help." Quran 1:5

Calling on a Goddess, a Horned God or spirits of nature is a form of shirk (associating others with Allah), which is the gravest sin in Islam.

Magic and spells

Islam takes magic (sihr) seriously. The Prophet ﷺ listed it among "the seven destructive sins", right after shirk (Sahih al-Bukhari 2766, Sahih Muslim 89). The Quran also says people who learn it gain what harms them and does not benefit them (Quran 2:102). Most scholars make no exception for so-called white magic, love spells or protection spells, because they rely on something other than Allah. See What is black magic in Islam?

The same goes for related practices often found in Wiccan circles, like tarot, astrology and crystals with "powers". See Is tarot reading haram? and Can I still read my horoscope after becoming Muslim?

What Islam shares: love of nature

Many people are drawn to Wicca because they feel close to the earth, the moon and the seasons. Islam honours that feeling but points it to the Creator. The Quran calls the sun, moon, rain and plants "signs" (ayat) of Allah, and Muslims are trustees of the earth, told not to waste or spoil it. Prayer times follow the sun, and the months follow the moon.

If you used to be Wiccan

  • Shahada wipes away everything before it. You don't need to feel ashamed of your past.
  • Let go of spell books, altars and charms; give away or dispose of them quietly.
  • Replace rituals with dhikr, dua and the morning and evening adhkar for protection.
  • Stay kind to Wiccan friends; respect costs you nothing.
Key points
  • Wicca involves worship of deities besides Allah, which is shirk.
  • Magic, including "white magic", is forbidden in Islam.
  • Islam shares a deep respect for nature as Allah's signs.
  • Treat Wiccan friends with kindness and good manners.
Tip: If you miss marking the seasons, try praying Fajr outdoors at sunrise or watching for the new moon of each Islamic month. It keeps that connection to nature, centred on Allah.
