What does the Quran say about zakat?

The Quran commands zakat as a duty, pairs it with prayer many times, names exactly who may receive it, promises reward to those who pay it and warns those who hoard wealth. It does not give the 2.5% rate or the nisab; those details come from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

It is a command, side by side with prayer

The word zakat appears around thirty times in the Quran, and in most of those places it comes right after prayer: "establish prayer and give zakah." Believers are described as people who pray and pay zakat, and the reward for both is mentioned together.

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ لَهُمْ أَجْرُهُمْ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ وَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ "Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakah will have their reward with their Lord, and no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve." Quran 2:277

It names who receives it

Surah at-Tawbah lists eight categories, and zakat may only go to them: the poor, the needy, those who collect and administer it, people whose hearts are being brought closer to Islam, freeing captives, people in debt, the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveller.

إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُ لِلْفُقَرَآءِ وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِ وَٱلْعَـٰمِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا وَٱلْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَفِى ٱلرِّقَابِ وَٱلْغَـٰرِمِينَ وَفِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ "Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler." Quran 9:60

For how these categories apply today, see Who can receive zakat?

It purifies and grows

Allah told the Prophet ﷺ to take charity from people's wealth "by which you purify them and cause them increase" (Quran 9:103). The Quran also contrasts interest, which looks like growth but does not increase with Allah, with zakat given for His sake, which is multiplied (Quran 30:39). Giving does not shrink your wealth in the way that matters. See Does giving charity make you poorer?

It warns against hoarding

Surah at-Tawbah also warns those who pile up gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah (Quran 9:34–35). Scholars explain that wealth on which zakat is paid is not the "hoarding" condemned here. The point is that money held back from its rightful share becomes a burden in the Hereafter.

What the Quran leaves to the Sunnah

The Quran sets the principle; the Prophet ﷺ explained the details: the 2.5% rate on savings, the nisab threshold, the one-year holding period and the rules for crops and livestock. That is why you need both sources to calculate it. See How do I calculate my zakat?

Key points
  • Zakat is mentioned around 30 times, usually alongside prayer.
  • Quran 9:60 names the eight groups who may receive it.
  • It purifies wealth and brings increase (Quran 9:103, 30:39).
  • The rate and threshold come from the Sunnah, not the Quran's text.
Tip: Read Surah at-Tawbah 9:60 with a simple translation and memorise the eight groups. It makes checking any zakat appeal much quicker.
