The most important dua for guidance is "Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqim" (Guide us to the straight path), which you already say in every prayer. The Prophet ﷺ also taught short duas for guidance that you can say any time, in Arabic or in your own words.

The dua you say in every rak'ah

Surah al-Fatihah is itself a dua, and its heart is a request for guidance. Every time you pray, you ask Allah to guide you to the straight path. Saying it slowly and meaning it turns each prayer into a fresh request for direction.

ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ "Guide us to the straight path." Quran 1:6

Duas the Prophet ﷺ taught

  • Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina. "O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity and self-sufficiency" (Sahih Muslim 2721). This was one of his own regular duas.
  • Allahummahdini wa saddidni. "O Allah, guide me and keep me on the right course." He taught this short one to Ali (Sahih Muslim 2725).
  • Ihdini limakhtulifa fihi minal-haqqi bi-idhnik. "Guide me to the truth in matters where people differ, by Your permission." He said this at the start of his night prayer (Sahih Muslim 770). It's a lovely dua when you feel confused by different opinions online.

Guidance for a specific decision

For choices like a job, a move or a marriage proposal, the Prophet ﷺ taught the istikhara prayer: two extra rak'ahs followed by a dua asking Allah to make the decision easy if it's good and turn you away from it if it's not. See What is istikhara and should I pray it before marriage?

Your own words count too

Many converts first prayed for guidance before they were even Muslim: "God, if You're there, show me the truth." Allah answered that dua. You can keep asking in English, anytime and anywhere. See Can I make dua in English?

You can also ask for guidance for others, such as family members who aren't Muslim. See Can I make dua for my non-Muslim family?

Guidance comes with steps

Dua opens the door, and you walk through it by learning, praying, keeping good company and acting on what you know. If you're going through doubts, asking for guidance is exactly the right response, not a sign of weak faith.

Key points
  • "Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqim" in al-Fatihah is the central dua for guidance.
  • "Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa..." and "Allahummahdini wa saddidni" are short prophetic duas.
  • Use istikhara when you need guidance on a specific decision.
  • You can always ask for guidance in your own words and language.
Tip: Learn "Allahummahdini wa saddidni" first. It's only four words, and you can say it before every big conversation, exam or decision.
