What dua do I say before a job interview?

A great dua before a job interview is the dua of Prophet Musa: "Rabbi-shrah li sadri, wa yassir li amri, wahlul 'uqdatan min lisani, yafqahu qawli" (My Lord, expand my chest, ease my task, and untie the knot from my tongue so they understand my speech). Add a heartfelt dua in your own words, then prepare well and trust Allah with the result.
The dua of Musa for clear speech
When Allah sent Musa to speak to Pharaoh, the most intimidating "interview" imaginable, Musa asked for confidence and clear words. His dua is recorded in Quran 20:25–28, and it fits any moment where you need to speak well under pressure.
You can say it on the way to the interview, while waiting in reception, or quietly in your heart before you walk in.
More duas you can use
- For ease: "Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahla, wa anta taj'alul-hazna idha shi'ta sahla" (O Allah, nothing is easy except what You make easy, and You make the difficult easy if You will). It is reported by Ibn Hibban.
- Leaving the house: "Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah." See What dua do I say when leaving the house?
- In your own words: "O Allah, if this job is good for me, give it to me, and if it isn't, keep it away from me and give me something better." It's completely fine to ask Allah for a job. See Can I make dua for worldly things like a job or a car?
Should I pray istikhara?
Istikhara is a two-rak'ah prayer followed by a dua asking Allah to choose what is best for you (Sahih al-Bukhari 1166). It's most useful when you have to decide, for example whether to apply or which offer to accept. You don't need a dream or a sign afterwards; just go ahead and let Allah make the path easy or hard. See What is istikhara and should I pray it before marriage?
Tie your camel
A man asked the Prophet ﷺ whether he should tie his camel or leave it and trust Allah. He said, "Tie it and trust Allah" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2517). For an interview, tying your camel means researching the company, practising answers, sleeping well and arriving on time. Dua isn't a replacement for preparation; it's what you add on top of it.
If you don't get the job, it doesn't mean your dua was wasted. Allah may give you something better, protect you from a problem you couldn't see, or save the reward for you.
- Musa's dua, "Rabbi-shrah li sadri…", is ideal for confidence and clear speech.
- You can ask Allah for a job in any language and in your own words.
- Pray istikhara when you have a real choice to make.
- Prepare properly; dua and effort go together.
