There's no special dua just for turbulence, but you can say any dua for distress, like the dua of Prophet Yunus or "Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil." You can say them silently, in Arabic or in your own language, while staying seated with your seatbelt on.

The dua of Yunus

Prophet Yunus called out to Allah from the darkness inside the whale, and Allah saved him:

لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers." Quran 21:87

In Latin letters: La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin. The next verse says Allah saves the believers in the same way, which makes it a comforting dua in any frightening moment.

More short duas for scary moments

  • Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil: "Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs." Ibrahim said it when he was thrown into the fire (Sahih al-Bukhari 4563).
  • The dua of distress: La ilaha illallahul-'Azimul-Halim, la ilaha illallahu Rabbul-'arshil-'azim, la ilaha illallahu Rabbus-samawati wa Rabbul-ardi wa Rabbul-'arshil-karim (Sahih al-Bukhari 6346).
  • Simple dhikr: "SubhanAllah," "Allahu akbar," or just "Ya Allah, keep us safe" in English. Allah understands every language.

Start the flight with the travel dua

When the Prophet ﷺ set out on a journey he said the travel dua, which begins with words from the Quran (Sahih Muslim 1342):

سُبْحَـٰنَ ٱلَّذِى سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَـٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُۥ مُقْرِنِينَ "Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it." Quran 43:13

Saying it at takeoff puts the whole flight in Allah's care. See What dua do I say when I travel?

Keep calm, practically

Turbulence is uncomfortable but very rarely dangerous. Keep your seatbelt fastened, breathe slowly, and let the dhikr set the rhythm of your breathing. Making dua and following safety instructions go together.

Key points
  • No specific turbulence dua exists; any dua for distress works.
  • The dua of Yunus is a powerful choice.
  • "Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil" is short and easy.
  • Say the travel dua at takeoff.
Tip: Save these duas as a note on your phone before you fly, so you can read them in airplane mode when the seatbelt sign comes on.
