What dua do I say to ask for Jannah?

A simple, authentic dua for Jannah is "Allahumma inni as'aluka al-jannah, wa a'udhu bika min an-nar" (O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and seek refuge in You from the Fire). The Prophet ﷺ approved of it, and he also taught us to aim high and ask for al-Firdaws, the highest level of Paradise.

The short dua the Prophet ﷺ approved

A man once told the Prophet ﷺ that he didn't know the long, beautiful duas the Prophet ﷺ and Mu'adh made. He only said in his prayer: "O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and seek refuge in You from the Fire." The Prophet ﷺ replied that their own duas revolve around the same thing (Sunan Abi Dawud 792). So if you are new and only know this one line, you are already asking for the most important thing.

The Prophet ﷺ also said that whoever asks Allah for Paradise three times, Paradise itself says, "O Allah, admit him into Paradise" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2572).

Ask for al-Firdaws

Don't ask small. The Prophet ﷺ said: "When you ask Allah, ask Him for al-Firdaws, for it is the middle and highest part of Paradise" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2790). You can say: "Allahumma inni as'aluka al-Firdaws al-a'la" (O Allah, I ask You for the highest Firdaws). See What are the levels of Jannah?

Duas for Jannah from the Quran

Asiyah, the believing wife of Pharaoh, lived in a palace but asked for a home near Allah instead:

رَبِّ ٱبْنِ لِى عِندَكَ بَيْتًا فِى ٱلْجَنَّةِ "My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise." Quran 66:11

And the most-used dua of the Prophet ﷺ covers both this life and the next, including protection from the Fire:

رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ "Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." Quran 2:201

When to say it

  • At the end of your prayer, before the final salam.
  • In sujood, when you are closest to Allah.
  • In the last third of the night and on Friday afternoons.
  • Any time you hear about Jannah or read about it in the Quran.

You can also ask in your own words and in your own language. Allah understands every tongue. See What is Jannah?

Key points
  • "Allahumma inni as'aluka al-jannah, wa a'udhu bika min an-nar" is short and authentic.
  • Asking for Paradise three times is a recommended habit.
  • Aim for al-Firdaws, the highest level.
  • Quran 66:11 and 2:201 are beautiful Quranic duas for the Hereafter.
Tip: After each prayer, say "Allahumma inni as'aluka al-jannah" three times before you stand up. It takes ten seconds and builds a lifelong habit of asking for the best thing there is.
