What dua do I say when I feel lazy?

The main dua for laziness is "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasal" (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness). The Prophet ﷺ said it regularly as part of a longer dua. Pair it with a small first step, because dua and effort work together.

The Prophet's dua against laziness

Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet ﷺ often said:

"Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal."

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, and from being overwhelmed by debt and overpowered by people" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6363). A similar version, also asking protection from laziness, is in Sahih Muslim 2706.

Notice what this tells you: even the best of creation asked Allah for protection from laziness. Feeling sluggish doesn't make you a bad Muslim. It's a normal human weakness, and the answer is to turn to Allah, not to beat yourself up. You can say it in Arabic or in your own words. See Can I make dua in my own words?

Start the day the sunnah way

The Prophet ﷺ explained that Shaytan ties three knots at the back of a sleeping person's head. When you wake up and remember Allah, one knot comes undone; when you make wudu, the second; when you pray, the third. Then you start the morning "energetic and in good spirits," otherwise lazy and in a bad mood (Sahih al-Bukhari 1142).

So a simple routine helps a lot: say a word of dhikr as soon as you open your eyes, make wudu, and pray, even if it's only Fajr on time.

Dua plus a small action

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Strive for what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not give up" (Sahih Muslim 2664). That is the whole formula: ask, then move.

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُوا۟ مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ "...Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves..." Quran 13:11
  • Pick one tiny task. Two minutes of tidying or one paragraph of work breaks the inertia.
  • Say Bismillah before you start, so even a small task becomes worship.
  • Move your body. A short walk or fresh air often lifts heaviness more than more scrolling.
  • Sleep early. Lots of "laziness" is really tiredness.

When it's more than laziness

If you feel flat, unmotivated and tired for weeks, it may be low mood, burnout or a health issue rather than laziness. Islam doesn't ask you to ignore that. Speak to a doctor, and be gentle with yourself. See What is convert burnout and how do I avoid it?

Key points
  • The key dua: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasal."
  • The Prophet ﷺ himself sought refuge from laziness.
  • Dhikr, wudu and prayer in the morning undo Shaytan's knots.
  • Ask Allah, then take one small step.
Tip: Write the dua on a sticky note by your desk or set it as your phone's lock screen. Say it once, then do just the first two minutes of the task you're avoiding.
