What dua do I say when I look in the mirror?

Many Muslims say "Allahumma kama hassanta khalqi fa hassin khuluqi" when they look in the mirror: "O Allah, just as You made my outward form beautiful, make my character beautiful too." The dua itself is authentic, though linking it specifically to the mirror comes from weaker reports, so it's a good habit rather than a strict sunnah.
The dua and where it comes from
Allahumma kama hassanta khalqi fa hassin khuluqi.
Imam Ahmad reports that the Prophet ﷺ used to make this dua, and many scholars graded the narration authentic. Some other reports say he said it specifically when looking in a mirror, but those chains are weak. So you can say it at the mirror, or at any time, with a clear conscience. It's a short, easy dua for a new Muslim to memorise.
Why this dua is so fitting
A mirror makes us think about our outside. This dua turns the moment toward our inside. Looks fade, but good character is what weighs most on the scale on the Day of Judgement. It also stops a mirror moment from becoming vanity or self-criticism: you thank Allah for how He made you and ask Him to improve the part that really matters.
Is it okay to care about how I look?
Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah is beautiful and loves beauty," right after a man asked whether liking nice clothes and shoes was arrogance. He explained that arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down on people (Sahih Muslim 91). Grooming, a neat appearance and checking yourself in the mirror are all fine. When the mirror is hard to face
- Thank Allah for your body, including the parts you don't love. It carries you to prayer every day.
- Avoid comparison with edited photos online. See Can I use beauty filters on my photos as a Muslim?
- Remember the dua's focus: character, not perfection.
- Seek help if negative body image affects your daily life. Talking to a doctor or counsellor is part of taking care of the trust Allah gave you.
- Say "Allahumma kama hassanta khalqi fa hassin khuluqi" at the mirror.
- The dua is authentic; the mirror link comes from weaker reports.
- Allah loves beauty, and caring for your appearance is not arrogance.
- Use the moment to ask for better character, not to judge yourself.
