What dua do I say when I'm afraid of someone?

When you're afraid of someone, you can say "Allahumma inna naj'aluka fi nuhurihim, wa na'udhu bika min shururihim" (O Allah, we put You before them and seek refuge in You from their evil). The Prophet ﷺ said this when he feared a group of people. "Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil" is another powerful choice.

The Prophet's ﷺ dua when he feared people

Abu Musa al-Ash'ari reported that when the Prophet ﷺ feared a people, he said: "Allahumma inna naj'aluka fi nuhurihim, wa na'udhu bika min shururihim" (Sunan Abi Dawud 1537). The image is of placing Allah between you and them, so that He deals with them for you.

If you're alone, you can say it in the singular: "Allahumma inni aj'aluka fi nuhurihim, wa a'udhu bika min shururihim". You can also simply say it in English. See Can I make dua in English?

"Allah is enough for me"

Ibn Abbas said that "Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil" (Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best guardian) was said by Prophet Ibrahim when he was thrown into the fire, and by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when people told him an army had gathered against him (Sahih al-Bukhari 4563).

ٱلَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا۟ لَكُمْ فَٱخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَـٰنًا وَقَالُوا۟ حَسْبُنَا ٱللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ ٱلْوَكِيلُ "Those to whom people said, 'Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.' But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, 'Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.'" Quran 3:173

Other duas for fear and stress

See What dua do I say when leaving the house?

Dua and practical safety go together

Islam never asks you to rely on dua alone while staying in danger. If someone is threatening, stalking or abusing you, tell someone you trust, keep records, and contact the police or a support service. In an emergency, call 911 (US), 999 (UK) or 112 (EU). Taking these steps is part of trusting Allah, not a lack of faith.

If the fear is about a boss, a relative or an ex who hurt you, it's fine to ask Allah to protect you from them and to set things right. Try to keep your dua focused on protection and justice rather than harm.

Key points
  • The sunnah dua: "Allahumma inna naj'aluka fi nuhurihim, wa na'udhu bika min shururihim".
  • "Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil" was said by Ibrahim and Muhammad ﷺ in moments of danger.
  • You can say these in Arabic or ask in your own words.
  • Dua goes hand in hand with real safety steps, like asking for help.
Tip: Save "Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil" as your phone's lock-screen text. When you feel that tight-chest fear coming, you'll have the words right in front of you.
