The best-known dua for staying firm in faith is "Ya Muqallibal-qulub, thabbit qalbi 'ala dinik" (O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion). The Prophet ﷺ said it often. The Quran also teaches "Rabbana la tuzigh qulubana" for the same purpose.

The Prophet's ﷺ most frequent dua

Umm Salamah said the dua the Prophet ﷺ made most often was: Ya Muqallibal-qulub, thabbit qalbi 'ala dinik. When asked why, he explained that every human heart is between two fingers of the Most Merciful, and He turns it as He wills (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2140). If the Prophet ﷺ himself asked for firmness, we need it even more.

A similar dua he taught is: Allahumma musarrifal-qulub, sarrif qulubana 'ala ta'atik, "O Allah, Turner of hearts, turn our hearts towards obeying You" (Sahih Muslim 2655).

The Quranic dua of the people of knowledge

Allah describes people firmly grounded in knowledge, and this is what they ask:

رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْوَهَّابُ "Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower." Quran 3:8

It fits converts perfectly: Allah has guided you, and you're asking Him to keep you there.

When your iman feels low

Faith goes up and down for everyone. Feeling flat, slipping into old habits, or having questions doesn't mean you're losing Islam. These are the moments to make these duas most. See What if I have doubts about Islam after becoming Muslim?

If you keep falling into the same sin, keep repenting and keep asking for firmness. Allah doesn't get tired of forgiving. See Will Allah forgive me if I keep committing the same sin?

Habits that keep the heart steady

  • Daily dhikr, even a few minutes. See What is dhikr and how do I start?
  • A little Quran every day, with a translation you understand.
