What fabric is best for a hijab?

The best hijab fabric is one that is opaque, breathable and stays in place: jersey, modal, chiffon (with an underscarf) and cotton voile are the most popular. Islam doesn't name a fabric. What matters is that it covers properly and isn't see-through, so choose by season, comfort and your daily routine.
What Islam actually asks of the fabric
There is no "halal fabric" list. Scholars agree on a few simple conditions: the hijab should cover the hair, it shouldn't be so thin that the hair shows through, and it should be loose enough not to cling. Any material that meets those conditions works, whether it's cheap cotton from a market stall or a designer silk. See What does hijab actually cover?
Clothing is both a covering and something beautiful. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah is beautiful and loves beauty" (Sahih Muslim 91), so it's fine to enjoy nice textures and colors.
Popular fabrics compared
- Jersey: stretchy, soft and grippy. It barely slips and needs few pins, which makes it a favorite for beginners, work and school.
- Modal and viscose: light, drapes beautifully and feels cool. Good all year round.
- Cotton and cotton voile: breathable and easy to wash. Great for hot days and sensitive skin.
- Chiffon and georgette: elegant for weddings and Eid, but often sheer. Wear an underscarf or double the layer so your hair doesn't show.
- Silk and satin: look polished but slide easily. Pair them with a grippy underscarf.
- Wool and cashmere blends: warm and cozy for winter.
How to test a new scarf
Hold the fabric up to a window or your phone light. If you can clearly see your fingers through one layer, it's too sheer to wear alone. Also check whether it clings or rides back after a few minutes of moving your head. See Can I wear tight or see-through clothes with hijab?
Matching fabric to your life
If you're always on the move, choose jersey or modal. For office meetings, a crisp cotton or crepe looks neat. For special occasions, chiffon with an underscarf is classic. Many sisters keep two or three "everyday" scarves in neutral colors and a few nicer ones for events. Hijab can be both modest and stylish. See Can hijab be stylish and fashionable?

- Jersey and modal are the easiest for beginners.
- Sheer fabrics like chiffon need an underscarf or a double layer.
