A Muslim who doesn't pray is committing one of the most serious sins in Islam. Scholars agree that denying the prayer is an obligation takes a person out of Islam. For someone who believes in it but skips it out of laziness, most scholars say they are a major sinner, not a disbeliever. The door to repentance stays open.

Why prayer is so central

The five daily prayers are the second pillar of Islam, right after the shahada. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Between a man and shirk and disbelief is abandoning the prayer" (Sahih Muslim 82). He also said the covenant between the believers and others is the prayer (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2621). The Quran describes people in Hellfire being asked why they are there:

قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ "They will say, 'We were not of those who prayed.'" Quran 74:43

What scholars say about the ruling

  • Denying it's obligatory: all scholars agree this is disbelief, because it rejects a clear pillar of the religion.
  • Skipping out of laziness: the Hanafi, Maliki and Shafi'i schools say the person remains Muslim but is committing a grave major sin. The well-known Hanbali view, and some Companions, considered completely abandoning prayer to be disbelief, based on the hadiths above.
  • Praying sometimes: someone who prays some prayers and misses others is not in the same category as someone who has abandoned it entirely, but each missed prayer is still a serious sin.

Either way, nobody should take this lightly. It's the first deed a person will be asked about on the Day of Judgement.

What should I do if I've stopped praying?

Start again today, with the next prayer. Repent sincerely, and don't let shame keep you away; that feeling is exactly what Shaytan uses to stop people coming back. Most scholars say to make up the prayers you missed as a Muslim, a few at a time alongside your daily prayers. See Will Allah forgive me if I keep committing the same sin?

New converts are not accountable for prayers before their shahada, and gradually building up the habit is normal.

When there's a deeper reason

Sometimes people stop praying because of depression, doubts or exhaustion. Those need care, not just guilt. See Do I still have to pray when I'm severely depressed? If it's your child, gentleness works better than pressure: What if my teenager stops praying?

Key points
  • Abandoning prayer is one of the gravest sins.
  • Denying it's obligatory takes a person out of Islam.
  • Most scholars say skipping out of laziness is a major sin, not disbelief.
  • Repentance is always open: start with the next prayer.
Tip: Don't wait to "fix everything" first. Pray just the next prayer, then the one after. Small, steady steps rebuild the habit faster than a big resolution.
