What if I forgot to pay zakat for years?

You still owe it, but don't panic. Scholars agree that missed zakat remains a debt to Allah and to the poor, so you should work out what you owed for each year and pay it as soon as you can. If you genuinely forgot or didn't know, Allah's mercy is wide. Make sincere repentance and start fixing it today.

Missed zakat is still owed

Zakat becomes due once a year passes with wealth above the nisab (Sunan Ibn Majah 1792). Forgetting doesn't cancel it, much like forgetting a loan doesn't cancel the loan. What forgetting does remove is the sin of deliberately withholding it:

رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَآ إِن نَّسِينَآ أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا "...Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred..." Quran 2:286

Note: for converts, this only applies to years after your shahada. See Do I have to pay zakat as a new Muslim?

Estimating past years

  • Find your starting point: roughly when your savings first passed the nisab.
  • Use records: old bank statements, investment summaries, gold receipts.
  • Year by year: calculate 2.5% of your zakatable wealth for each year.
  • When unsure: make a reasonable estimate, and round up rather than down.

Many scholars say you can subtract the zakat owed for earlier years before calculating later years, since that money was already owed to the poor. A knowledgeable imam or a zakat advisor at a Muslim charity can help.

Paying it off

Pay as soon as you reasonably can. If the total is large and paying it all at once would cause real hardship, many scholars allow a short, committed payment plan. Don't let the size of the number stop you from starting.

Repentance and hope

Ask Allah's forgiveness, especially if you knew and kept putting it off. Then set up a system so it doesn't happen again: a fixed zakat date, a calendar reminder and a simple spreadsheet. See When do I have to pay zakat?

Key points
  • Missed zakat is still a debt.
  • Estimate each year as fairly as you can.
  • Pay as soon as possible, in a plan if needed.
  • Repent and set up a yearly reminder.
Tip: Ask a Muslim charity with a zakat helpline to check your calculation. Many offer this free, and it's a big weight off your mind.
