What if my savings drop below nisab during the year?

It depends on your school of thought. Most scholars say that if your savings fall below nisab during the year, the zakat year resets and starts again once you're back above it. The Hanafi school says only the start and the end of the year matter, so a dip in the middle doesn't break it.
The zakat year (hawl) in short
Zakat on money is due when your savings reach the nisab (the minimum amount, based on the value of gold or silver) and stay with you for one lunar year, called the hawl. See How much money do I need before I have to pay zakat? Real life is messy, though: car repairs, rent and a lost job can push your balance down for a few weeks. That's where the schools differ.
The majority view: the year restarts
The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools say your wealth must stay at or above nisab for the whole year. If it drops below at any point, the clock stops. When your savings climb back above nisab, a new year starts from that day.
Example: you passed nisab in Ramadan, fell below it in Dhul Hijjah, and rose above it again in Safar. Under this view, your new zakat date is in Safar.
The Hanafi view: start and end matter
The Hanafi school looks at two points only: the day you first reached nisab and the same date one lunar year later. If you are above nisab on both days, you pay on what you hold at the end, even if you dipped in the middle. Only if your wealth drops to zero does the year reset. Many converts in the West follow this method because it's simpler: one fixed date every year, no tracking. See How do I calculate my zakat?
Pick a method and stay consistent
Both views are serious scholarly positions. Choose the one followed by your local mosque or teacher, then stick with it rather than switching each year to whatever gives the smallest bill. Islam asks for sincere effort, not perfect bookkeeping:
If you're unsure whether you dipped below nisab at all, many scholars advise paying anyway. Extra zakat is never wasted; it simply counts as sadaqah.
- Zakat needs nisab held for one lunar year.
- Majority: dropping below nisab restarts the year.
- Hanafi: only the first and last day of the year count.
- Choose one method and use it consistently.
