What if my school PE uniform isn't modest?

It depends on your school, but in most cases you can make it work. Many schools allow students to wear leggings or tracksuit bottoms under shorts, a long-sleeved top under the PE shirt, and a sports hijab. Ask politely, ideally in writing, explaining it's for religious reasons. Most schools in the UK, the USA and much of Europe already accommodate this.

What Islam asks for

The Quran describes clothing as a gift that covers us and lets us look good:

يَٰبَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ قَدْ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ لِبَاسًۭا يُوَٰرِى سَوْءَٰتِكُمْ وَرِيشًۭا "O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment." Quran 7:26
  • Boys: most scholars say to cover from the navel to the knee. The Prophet ﷺ told a man: "Cover your thigh, for indeed it is 'Awrah" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2798). Short PE shorts are the main issue.
  • Girls (after puberty): around boys and male teachers, cover everything except the face and hands, in clothing that isn't tight or see-through.

Sport itself is fine. It's the uniform that sometimes needs adjusting.

Easy fixes

  • Boys: longer shorts that reach past the knee, or compression tights under the school shorts.
  • Girls: leggings or tracksuit bottoms, a long-sleeved base layer under the PE top, and a loose, longer top over it if allowed.
  • Hijab: a sports hijab without pins is safer for running and ball games. See How do I wear hijab for sports?
  • School colors: buying the extra layers in the school's colors makes approval much easier.

How to ask the school

Send a short email to the PE department or head of year, or have a parent do it. Something like: "For religious reasons, I need to cover my legs and arms during PE. Could I wear plain black leggings and a long-sleeved top under the uniform?" Keep it friendly and practical. In the UK, schools are expected to consider religious needs in their uniform policies, and in the USA, public schools generally have to make reasonable religious accommodations. If you get a flat refusal, ask to see the written uniform policy and speak to the head teacher or principal.

Changing rooms and mixed classes

  • Changing: wear your PE base layers under your school clothes, or change in a toilet cubicle. Avoid looking at others while they change.
  • Mixed PE: in mixed lessons, keep your clothing loose and your gaze lowered. Some schools offer girls-only groups for certain sports.
  • Swimming: that needs its own plan. See Can I take part in swimming lessons at school as a Muslim?

If, after trying, your school truly won't allow any change, do the best you can with what's allowed and keep asking respectfully. Allah sees your effort and your intention, and He doesn't hold you responsible for what's truly beyond your control.

Key points
  • Sport is fine; the uniform may need adjusting.
  • Boys cover navel to knee; girls cover more around boys.
  • Leggings, base layers and sports hijabs solve most issues.
  • Ask the school politely and in writing.
Tip: Bring the actual items you want to wear when you ask. Teachers say yes much more easily when they can see it's plain, practical sportswear in school colors.
