What if my teacher asks me to shake hands?

Politely decline with a warm smile, a hand on your heart and a short explanation. Most scholars say Muslims should not shake hands with unrelated people of the opposite sex, but you can say so kindly. A calm, friendly tone is what people remember, and most teachers respect it right away.

When it applies

If your teacher is the same gender as you, a handshake is perfectly fine. The question only comes up with a teacher of the opposite gender. Most scholars from the four schools advise not shaking hands with an unrelated person of the opposite sex. Aisha reported that when women pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ, he accepted it by words, and his hand never touched the hand of any woman (Sahih al-Bukhari 5288). A minority of contemporary scholars allow a brief handshake if refusing would cause real harm, so if this is a worry, speak to a scholar you trust. See Can I still shake hands with the opposite sex as a Muslim?

How to decline kindly

  • Hand on your heart. Place your right hand on your chest, smile and nod. Many people already recognise it as a warm greeting.
  • Greet first. Say "Good morning" or "Nice to meet you" with a smile before a hand is offered, so there is no awkward moment.
  • Keep the explanation short. "For religious reasons I don't shake hands, but it's lovely to meet you" is enough.
  • Say it with warmth. Eye contact and a friendly voice show that you mean no disrespect.
  • Be consistent. If you politely decline everyone of that gender, nobody feels singled out.

The Quran describes gentleness as a mercy that Allah gave the Prophet ﷺ (Quran 3:159). That gentleness is a good model for how to say no.

If it still feels awkward

  • If a hand is already out: smile, place your hand on your heart and say, "Sorry, I don't shake hands, but I'm really glad to meet you."
  • If the teacher seems offended: apologise sincerely and explain that it is not personal. Most people then relax.
  • If a teacher insists: stay calm and polite. Most schools and universities respect this, and you can ask a head of year or student support for help.
  • At meetings with parents: a parent can send a short note to the teacher in advance.

Formal events are another common moment. See Can I shake hands at my graduation ceremony?

Giving them something in return

Showing respect in other ways helps. Be on time, say thank you, answer politely and take part in class. If a coach or tutor has the same issue, the same words work. See What do I do if a coach of the opposite sex wants to shake hands?

  • A warm tone matters more than the words you choose.
