What if my work uniform isn't modest?

Ask for a modest version of the uniform first. Most employers in the UK, Europe and the USA will offer longer sleeves, trousers instead of a skirt, a looser fit or a branded hijab when asked. If no change is possible, look for a role or job where you can cover properly.

What Islam asks you to cover

Clothing in Islam is meant to cover and to dignify:

يَـٰبَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ قَدْ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ لِبَاسًا يُوَٰرِى سَوْءَٰتِكُمْ وَرِيشًا ۖ وَلِبَاسُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ "O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best..." Quran 7:26
  • Men: at minimum from the navel to the knees, with clothes that aren't skin-tight or see-through. Shorts above the knee are the usual problem.
  • Women: the whole body except the face and hands, according to most scholars (some also allow the feet), in loose, non-transparent clothing. Short sleeves, short skirts and tight fits are the usual problems.

How to ask for a change

  • Speak to your manager or HR early, ideally before your first shift.
  • Be specific: "Could I wear the trousers version?", "Could I add a long-sleeved top under the polo?", "Could I wear a hijab in the company colour?"
  • Offer to source the extra items yourself in the uniform colours.
  • Put the request in writing if it's not resolved quickly.

In the UK (Equality Act 2010), the EU and the USA (Title VII), employers usually have to consider religious requests and can only refuse with a good, real reason such as safety. Many big companies already offer hijabs and modest options. See What if my employer bans the hijab?

Small fixes that often work

  • A plain long-sleeved undershirt under a short-sleeved polo.
  • Leggings or opaque tights plus a longer skirt, or company trousers. See Can Muslim women wear trousers?
  • A size up for a looser fit.
  • A sports or tucked-in hijab that meets safety rules around machinery.

If the employer says no

If there's truly no flexibility, the safest option is to look for another role or employer while doing your best in the meantime. If you rely on the job and can't leave immediately, cover as much as you're allowed, keep asking, and keep searching. Allah sees your effort. Don't remove your hijab or uncover more just to fit in socially when there's no real need. See Can I take off my hijab at work?

Key points
  • Men cover navel to knee; women cover all but face and hands (most scholars).
  • Ask for modest options early, clearly and in writing.
  • Western laws usually protect reasonable religious dress requests.
  • If no change is possible, look for a better-fitting job.
Tip: Bring a photo of your proposed modest uniform to the conversation. Showing it looks smart and on-brand makes "yes" much easier for a manager.
