What if only a few minutes are left before prayer time ends?

Yes, you can still pray, so start straight away. Make a quick but complete wudu, then pray the obligatory part without skipping any pillar. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever catches one rakah within the time has caught the prayer. Calm matters more than speed, so keep it short rather than rushed.

One rakah in time counts

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever could get one rakah of a prayer in its proper time has got the prayer" (Sahih al-Bukhari 580). He gave examples: one rakah of Fajr before sunrise, or one rakah of Asr before sunset (Sahih al-Bukhari 579). Most scholars understand from this that if you begin early enough to complete a full rakah before time ends, your prayer is counted as on time, and the rest can finish after.

That is a mercy for people who were held up, not a plan for pushing prayers to the last second. The Prophet ﷺ described someone who sits watching the sun until it is almost gone and then pecks through the prayer as a hypocrite's way of praying (Sahih Muslim 622). See Is it haram to delay prayer?

How to pray fast without rushing

  • Do wudu quickly but fully. Washing each part once is enough, as the Prophet ﷺ sometimes did (Sahih al-Bukhari 157).
  • Skip the extras. Leave out optional sunnah prayers and pray only the obligatory (fard) one now.
  • Keep the recitation short. Recite al-Fatiha, then a very short surah, or none if you're truly out of time.
  • Don't cut the pillars. A man who prayed too fast was told three times, "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed," and was taught to be at ease in each position (Sahih al-Bukhari 757).
  • Don't shorten the number of rakat. A four-rakah prayer stays four unless you are travelling.

What the schools say

The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools follow the hadith above: one rakah in time means the prayer is on time. The Hanafi school accepts it for Asr, but says a Fajr prayer is spoiled if the sun rises in the middle of it, so Hanafis are advised to be stricter at dawn. If you follow a school, ask your imam how it applies to you.

If the time has already gone

If you couldn't even fit one rakah, don't panic or skip the prayer. Pray it right away. If you were truly held up, there is no sin, and you simply make it up as soon as you can. If you left it late through carelessness, repent, pray at once, and plan better next time. See How do I make up missed prayers?

The best fix is a system. Pray early in the window whenever you can. A reminder 20 to 30 minutes before the end of each prayer, plus a reliable timetable, helps. See Can I trust prayer time apps?

Key points
  • If you can complete one rakah in time, the prayer counts as on time.
  • Make a quick but complete wudu and pray only the obligatory part.
  • Never skip pillars or rush without stillness.
  • If time has gone, pray immediately and make it up; don't wait.
Tip: Set a "last call" reminder 20 minutes before sunrise for Fajr and before sunset for Asr. Those are the two prayers whose time most often runs out.
