What if scrolling at night makes me miss Fajr?

Pray Fajr as soon as you wake up, then fix the late-night scrolling that caused it. Sleeping through a prayer by accident isn't a sin in itself, but staying up on your phone when you know it makes you miss Fajr is a habit you're responsible for changing.
First: pray it when you wake
If you wake up after sunrise, don't wait until the next day or skip it out of guilt. Make wudu and pray the two rak'ahs of Fajr right away. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever forgets a prayer should pray it when they remember, and that is its only expiation (Sahih al-Bukhari 597). He then recited:
Scholars count oversleeping the same way as forgetting, as long as it wasn't deliberate.
Is it a sin if my phone caused it?
A person who is asleep isn't held accountable while asleep. But scholars point out that if you knowingly stay up until 3 a.m. scrolling, set no alarm, and this happens again and again, the problem isn't the sleep; it's the choice before it. That's where you need to take responsibility. Allah is forgiving, and one sincere change of habit is worth more than a hundred guilty mornings.
Why the Prophet ﷺ slept early
The Prophet ﷺ disliked sleeping before Isha and chatting after it (Sahih al-Bukhari 568). The sunnah rhythm is simple: pray Isha, wind down, sleep, and wake for Fajr. Late-night screens break that rhythm, and blue light makes it harder to fall asleep even when you put the phone down.
Practical fixes that work
- Phone curfew: set app limits or Downtime to start 30–60 minutes after Isha.
- Charge it across the room: you'll scroll less in bed and have to get up to switch off the alarm.
- Two alarms: one for Fajr, one ten minutes later. A prayer app with the adhan helps. See Can I trust prayer time apps?
- Bedtime adhkar instead of reels: make them the last thing you do. See What should I say before sleeping?
- Ask for help: a spouse, roommate or Muslim friend can call or text you at Fajr.

- Pray Fajr as soon as you wake, even after sunrise.
- Oversleeping isn't a sin; knowingly causing it repeatedly is a problem.
- The sunnah is to sleep soon after Isha.
- Phone curfews and alarms across the room make a real difference.
