What is a burkini?

Yes, it's simply a modest swimsuit. A burkini is a full-coverage swimsuit made so women can swim while staying modest. It usually has long sleeves, full-length leggings, a tunic top that falls over the hips, and an attached or separate swim hood. It's made from normal quick-drying swimwear fabric, so you can swim in it just like in any other costume.

Where the burkini came from

The name mixes "burqa" and "bikini," but it has nothing to do with a burqa: the face stays fully visible. The design became popular in Australia in the mid-2000s, and today many sports brands and modest-fashion labels sell their own versions, often simply called "modest swimwear." Women of other faiths, and people who just want sun protection, wear them too.

Do Muslim women have to wear one?

Not a burkini specifically. Islam doesn't require a particular garment; it asks women to dress modestly in front of men who aren't close family. The Quran says:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ قُل لِّأَزْوَٰجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَآءِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلَـٰبِيبِهِنَّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰٓ أَن يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا "O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful." Quran 33:59

A burkini is simply one practical way to meet that standard in the water. In a women-only session, the rules are looser, and many women wear a regular swimsuit that covers at least from the navel to the knees. See Can I still go swimming at a public pool as a Muslim?

Does every burkini meet hijab standards?

Not always. Scholars say clothing in front of non-mahram men shouldn't be tight or see-through, and some cheaper burkinis cling like a wetsuit once they're wet. Look for:

  • A long, loose tunic that reaches mid-thigh or lower, so your shape isn't outlined.
  • Thicker, matte fabric, which hides more than thin, shiny material.
  • A secure hood with a fitted swim cap underneath, so hair doesn't slip out. See How do I wear hijab for sports?
  • Darker colors, which show less when wet.

Many women add swim shorts or a swim skirt over the leggings for extra coverage.

Burkinis at pools, beaches and school

Most public pools in the US and UK accept burkinis because they're made of proper swimwear fabric. A few places, mainly some French towns and private pools, have had rules against them over the years. If you're unsure, check the pool's dress code or call ahead. Schools usually allow them for swimming lessons too. See Can I take part in swimming lessons at school as a Muslim?

Key points
  • A burkini is a full-body swimsuit with a hood that leaves the face uncovered.
  • Islam requires modesty, not a specific swimsuit brand or style.
  • Choose a loose, thick, non-see-through burkini for mixed settings.
  • Most pools accept burkinis; check the dress code if unsure.
Tip: Buy your first burkini from a shop with an easy return policy and try it wet in the shower at home. You'll see straight away whether it clings or turns see-through.
