What is a hafiz?
A hafiz is a Muslim who has memorized the entire Quran by heart, all 114 surahs and over 6,000 verses. The word means "guardian" or "preserver" in Arabic. A woman is called a hafiza, and the plural is huffaz. Millions of people around the world, children and adults, hold this title today.
What the word means
Hafiz comes from the Arabic root meaning to guard or keep safe. A hafiz "guards" the Quran in their chest. In some countries the title is written before a name, such as "Hafiz Ahmed," and in South Asia you may hear "Hafiz-e-Quran." Becoming a hafiz isn't a priestly rank; it's an honour anyone can work toward, whatever their background.
Why memorization matters in Islam
The Quran was first preserved in people's hearts, then in writing. Huffaz in every generation can check each other, which is one reason the text is the same everywhere. See Was the Quran changed over time? Allah also tells us He made it easy to remember:
The honour of a hafiz
- The Prophet ﷺ said that one who is skilled in the Quran will be with the noble, righteous angel-scribes, and one who recites it with difficulty, stumbling over it, gets a double reward (Sahih al-Bukhari 4937).
- He also said it will be said to the companion of the Quran on the Day of Judgment: "Recite and rise, and recite slowly as you did in the world, for your rank will be at the last verse you recite" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2914).
- In congregational prayer, the person who knows the most Quran is generally preferred to lead, so huffaz often lead taraweeh in Ramadan.
How long does it take?
Full-time students in a hifz school often finish in 2–4 years. People studying part-time may take 5–10 years. A common method is to memorize a few lines or a page a day, revise yesterday's lesson, and review older portions every week. Keeping it is a lifelong job: the Prophet ﷺ warned that the Quran slips away from memory faster than a camel escapes its rope if it isn't revised (Sahih al-Bukhari 5033). A standard mushaf has 604 pages, so you can see the scale. See How long does it take to read the whole Quran?
Do I need to be a hafiz?
No. Every Muslim needs only enough to pray: al-Fatiha and a few short surahs. Memorizing more is a beautiful extra, not a duty for each person. Start small. See How do I memorize short surahs for prayer?
