What is a hijab underscarf?

A hijab underscarf is a thin cap or tube worn under your main scarf to hold your hair back, stop slipping and make sure no hair shows. It isn't a religious requirement, but it makes wearing hijab much easier and neater, especially for beginners.
What it does
- Keeps hair covered: stray hairs at the forehead and nape stay hidden, even if the outer scarf shifts.
- Stops slipping: cotton or jersey grips the hair and gives the outer scarf something to hold.
- Makes thin scarves opaque: chiffon and other sheer fabrics become wearable with a solid underscarf beneath.
- Protects your scarf: it absorbs sweat and hair oil, so your main scarves stay clean longer.
Common types
- Tube cap: a simple stretchy tube pulled over the head. The most common type.
- Tie-back bonnet: ties at the back so you can adjust the tightness.
- Ninja underscarf: covers the head and neck in one piece, great for winter and for keeping the neck covered.
- Mesh or bamboo caps: light and breathable for summer.
- Satin-lined caps: help reduce friction on curly or textured hair.
Is it required?
No. What Islam requires is that the hair, neck and ears are covered and the chest is covered by the scarf. The Quran tells believing women to draw their head coverings over their chests:
If your scarf does that well on its own, you don't need an underscarf. Many sisters still wear one simply because it's practical. See Can my neck or ears show when I wear hijab?
How to wear one
Tie your hair in a low bun or braid, pull the cap on so it sits at your hairline, tuck in any loose strands, then put your outer scarf on top. Avoid stuffing it with extra volume to look taller. See Is the hair bun under hijab haram?
Remember that for wudu you'll need to take off or loosen the cap to wipe your head, unless you follow the view that allows wiping over a wrapped head covering. See Can I wipe over my hijab in wudu?
