What is a true dream in Islam?

A true dream (ru'ya salihah) is a good, pious dream that Allah may use to give a believer glad tidings. The Prophet ﷺ said it is one of forty-six parts of prophethood. It is hard to know for sure which dreams are true, and no dream is ever a source of religious rulings.
What the hadith say
The Prophet ﷺ said, "A good dream is a part of the forty-six parts of prophethood" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6989). He also said that after him nothing is left of prophethood except the "mubashshirat," which he explained as the true good dreams that bring glad tidings (Sahih al-Bukhari 6990).
Many scholars explain the number by the beginning of revelation: the Prophet's ﷺ revelation started with true dreams for about six months, out of roughly 23 years of prophethood. So the hadith honours true dreams, but it does not mean that a dream is revelation.
The Quran gives an example of a true vision, when Allah confirmed the Prophet's ﷺ dream about entering Makkah:
True dream, bad dream or ordinary dream?
The Prophet ﷺ said dreams are of three types: a good dream that is glad tidings from Allah, a painful dream from Shaytan, and a dream that comes from one's own mind (Sahih Muslim 2263). He also said that the truest dreams belong to the one who is most truthful in speech (Sahih Muslim 2263). So honesty and sincerity matter more than anything else. See Do dreams mean anything in Islam?
- True dream (ru'ya): good, calming and from Allah. It is rare, and you cannot be certain which dream is one.
- Bad dream (hulm): frightening or sad, from Shaytan. It carries no message.
- Mind-made dream: your thoughts, worries and day replayed. Most dreams are this kind.
What to do with a good dream
Thank Allah, feel happy and share it only with someone you love and trust (Sahih Muslim 2261). Do not boast about it or use it to claim a special rank. A true dream may bring hope, but it does not prove that you are righteous. It is also not a replacement for effort: keep praying, working and making good decisions.
What a true dream is not
- It is not a source of halal and haram. Religion is already complete in the Quran and the Sunnah.
- It is not a reason to make a major life decision. Use istikhara and good advice. See What is istikhara and should I pray it before marriage?
- It is not a code to be decoded with a "dream dictionary." Fixed meanings for symbols are unreliable. See What does it mean to see a dead person in a dream?
Some people ask about a special kind of true dream, seeing the Prophet ﷺ. See Can I see the Prophet Muhammad in a dream?
- A true dream is a good dream from Allah and one of forty-six parts of prophethood (Sahih al-Bukhari 6989).
- Dreams are of three kinds: from Allah, from Shaytan, or from your own mind (Sahih Muslim 2263).
- Share good dreams only with people you love and trust.
- Dreams never decide halal and haram or big life decisions.
