What is barzakh?

Barzakh is the in-between stage after death and before the Day of Resurrection, where every soul waits. The word means "barrier": the dead can't come back to this world, and the Day of Judgement hasn't started yet. For believers it can be a time of peace and comfort.
Where the word comes from
"Barzakh" literally means a barrier or partition between two things. The Quran uses it for the stage after death, describing someone who begs to be sent back to do good deeds.
So barzakh is not a place you can point to on a map. It is a stage of existence, and the grave is its doorway. Every person passes through it, whether they were buried, cremated or lost at sea.
What happens there
Soon after burial, two angels question the dead about their Lord, their religion and their prophet. See What happens in the grave in Islam? After that, the soul experiences either comfort or hardship until the Resurrection.
- A preview of the final home. The Prophet ﷺ said that a dead person is shown their place in Paradise or in the Fire, morning and evening, until the Day of Resurrection (Sahih al-Bukhari 1379).
- The martyrs. Their souls are in green birds that move freely in Paradise (Sahih Muslim 1887).
- Time feels different. Many scholars note that the Quran describes people on Judgement Day feeling as if they stayed only a day or part of a day, so the wait may feel short.
Your deeds can still reach you
The book of deeds closes at death, with three exceptions: ongoing charity, knowledge that keeps benefiting people, and a righteous child who prays for you (Sahih Muslim 1631). Others can also give charity on behalf of the dead and make dua for them, and scholars agree this reaches them. See Can I give charity on behalf of someone who died?
Body and soul
Sunni scholars teach that barzakh is experienced mainly by the soul, while it keeps a connection with the body. How that works is part of the unseen. We believe what the texts say and don't speculate beyond them. For the full journey from death to the Day of Judgement, see What do Muslims believe happens after death?
