What is ihsan in Islam?

Ihsan means worshipping Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, remembering that He sees you. It is the highest level of faith in Islam. The word also means doing things beautifully and with excellence, so ihsan covers both your devotion to Allah and the way you treat people.
The hadith of Jibril
Ihsan is explained in a famous hadith in which the angel Jibril (Gabriel) came to the Prophet ﷺ in the form of a man and asked about Islam, faith (iman) and ihsan. When he asked, "What is ihsan?", the Prophet ﷺ replied: "That you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, for though you don't see Him, He, verily, sees you" (Sahih Muslim 8). Another version says, "if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you" (Sahih al-Bukhari 50).
Scholars see three levels in this hadith: Islam (the actions), iman (the beliefs) and ihsan (doing it all with presence and sincerity of heart).
What ihsan feels like in worship
Imagine praying in front of someone you deeply love and respect. You would slow down, pay attention and give your best. Ihsan is that attitude all the time:
- In prayer: being present, understanding what you recite and not rushing.
- In private: avoiding sin even when nobody can see you, because Allah can.
- In effort: doing worship properly, not just ticking a box.
It is closely linked to taqwa. See What is taqwa?
Ihsan toward people and everything else
The word also means excellence and kindness. The Quran says, "Allah commands justice, grace, as well as courtesy to close relatives" (Quran 16:90). The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah has prescribed goodness in everything (Sahih Muslim 1955), so a Muslim is meant to work, cook, drive and speak with care. The Quran also asks, "Is there any reward for goodness except goodness?" (Quran 55:60).
How to grow in ihsan
- Slow your prayer down. Take one prayer a day and focus fully on the meaning.
- Remember Allah during the day. Short remembrance keeps awareness alive. See What is dhikr and how do I start?
- Do small things well: be on time, finish tasks properly, be gentle in your words.
- Check your intention before and after good deeds.
- Be patient: this is a lifelong journey, and even strong believers struggle with focus.
If your mind wanders in worship, that does not mean you have failed. See Does dhikr count if my mind wanders? and What is tawhid in Islam?
- Ihsan is worshipping Allah as if you see Him, knowing He sees you (Sahih Muslim 8).
- It is the third level after Islam and iman.
- It also means excellence and kindness in all you do.
- Grow in it step by step, with small habits and patience.
