What is the Quran about?

The Quran is about God and humanity's relationship with Him: who God is, why we were created, how to live, and what happens after death. Muslims believe it is the word of Allah revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ over about 23 years. It mixes belief, stories of earlier prophets, guidance for daily life and reminders of the afterlife.
A book of guidance
The Quran describes itself above all as guidance. Near its very beginning it says:
It has 114 chapters (surahs) of very different lengths. Muslims believe the angel Jibril brought it to the Prophet ﷺ, who memorized and taught it. See Who wrote the Quran?
The main themes
- The Oneness of God: Allah is One, Merciful, All-Knowing and the only One worthy of worship.
- Signs in nature: the sky, rain, plants, the human body and the alternation of night and day, presented as reasons to reflect.
- Stories of prophets: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Mary and Jesus, among others, told for their lessons rather than as a timeline.
- Worship and law: prayer, fasting, charity, marriage, inheritance, trade and fair dealing.
- Character: honesty, patience, forgiveness, kindness to parents, orphans, neighbors and the poor.
- The afterlife: resurrection, judgment, Paradise and Hell, and the mercy of Allah.
Why it doesn't read like a novel
Many first-time readers are surprised that the Quran jumps between themes and doesn't tell stories from start to finish. It was revealed in response to real events, and its order was set by the Prophet ﷺ rather than by date. It is meant to be recited, reflected on and returned to again and again. See Why isn't the Quran in chronological order?
The Quran lived out
When Aisha was asked about the Prophet's ﷺ character, she answered that his character was the Quran (Sahih Muslim 746). In other words, the best way to see what the Quran is about is to see how the Prophet ﷺ lived it: with prayer, mercy, honesty and justice.
- The Quran is about God, purpose, guidance and the afterlife.
- It has 114 surahs revealed over about 23 years.
- It is arranged by theme and recitation, not by date.
- The Prophet's ﷺ life shows it in practice.
