What is Surah al-Baqarah about?

Surah al-Baqarah ("The Cow") is the longest chapter of the Quran, and it is about guidance: who accepts it, who rejects it, and how a believing community should live. It has 286 verses, was revealed mostly in Madinah, and covers faith, stories of earlier prophets, and practical laws on prayer, fasting, Hajj, family and money.
Why is it called "The Cow"?
The name comes from a story in verses 67–73. Moses told the Children of Israel to slaughter a cow, and instead of simply obeying they asked question after question about its age, colour and type, making it harder for themselves. The lesson is about sincere, simple obedience to Allah, not looking for loopholes. Surahs are often named after a memorable story or word inside them, not their whole topic.
The main themes
The surah opens by describing the Quran itself:
- Three kinds of people (verses 1–20): believers, open disbelievers and hypocrites.
- The story of Adam and his forgiveness (verses 30–39).
- The Children of Israel: a long section on their blessings and mistakes, as a warning for Muslims not to repeat them.
- Abraham and the Kaaba, and the change of the qibla from Jerusalem to Makkah.
- Laws: fasting in Ramadan (2:183), Hajj, marriage and divorce, debts and the ban on riba (interest). Verse 2:282, about writing down debts, is the longest verse in the Quran.
- Ayat al-Kursi (2:255), the greatest verse. See What is Ayat al-Kursi and when do I recite it?
Its special virtues
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not turn your houses into graves. Shaytan flees from the house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited" (Sahih Muslim 780). He also told people to recite al-Baqarah and Al Imran, calling them "the two bright ones," and said that taking al-Baqarah is a blessing and leaving it is a regret (Sahih Muslim 804). And whoever recites its last two verses at night, they will be enough for him (Sahih al-Bukhari 5009). Playing a recording is good too, but reading it yourself is what these narrations praise. How a new Muslim can approach it
It's about 2.5 juz' (roughly 48 pages), so don't feel you must finish it in one go. Read a page or two a day with a good translation and short notes, and you'll finish it in a month. Many people start the Quran here because it comes right after al-Fatiha. See Where should I start reading the Quran as a new Muslim?
- Al-Baqarah is the longest surah: 286 verses, mostly Madinan.
- It's named after the story of Moses and the cow (2:67–73).
- It covers faith, earlier nations and many core laws.
- Reciting it at home keeps Shaytan away (Sahih Muslim 780).
