Mostly, Surah al-Ikhlas (chapter 112) is a four-verse summary of who Allah is. It says that Allah is One, that all creation depends on Him, that He has no children and no parents, and that nothing is comparable to Him. It is the shortest and clearest statement of Islamic monotheism (tawhid).

The surah and its meaning

قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ "Say, [O Prophet,] 'He is Allah, One [and Indivisible]. Allah, the Sustainer [needed by all]. He has never had offspring, nor was He born. And there is none comparable to Him.'" Quran 112:1-4
  • "Ahad" (One): Allah is absolutely one, with no partners and no parts.
  • "As-Samad" (the Sustainer): everything needs Him, and He needs nothing.
  • "He has never had offspring, nor was He born": Allah has no children and no beginning.
  • "None comparable to Him": nothing in creation is like Him in any way.

Why is it called "Ikhlas"?

Ikhlas means sincerity or purity. The surah purifies belief in God from anything that does not befit Him, so it is also called "Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad" after its first words. It also answers ideas about God that Muslims reject, such as a Trinity or a divine son. See Do Muslims believe in the Trinity?

"One-third of the Quran"

The Prophet ﷺ said that this surah is "equal to one-third of the Qur'an" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5013). Scholars explain that the Quran's main themes include belief in Allah, rulings and stories, and this surah is purely about belief in Allah, so it carries that weight. It does not mean you can skip reading the rest of the Quran.

A surah to love

The Prophet ﷺ once sent a man to lead a military expedition who always ended his recitation in prayer with this surah. When asked why, he said it describes the Most Compassionate and that he loved to recite it. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Inform him that Allah loves him" (Sahih Muslim 813).

It's also one of the three "Quls" recited for protection in the morning and evening. See What are the "three Quls" and when do I read them? Because it is so short, it is among the first surahs most new Muslims learn. See Which surahs should I memorize first as a new Muslim?

Key points
  • Surah al-Ikhlas (112) has four verses and summarises Islamic belief in One God.
  • It says Allah is One, self-sufficient, has no children or parents, and has no equal.
  • The Prophet ﷺ said it equals one-third of the Quran (Sahih al-Bukhari 5013).
  • The Prophet ﷺ said Allah loves the man who loved to recite it (Sahih Muslim 813).
Tip: Learn the four verses with their meaning, not just the sounds. Reciting them with understanding in your prayer turns a short surah into a daily reminder of who you are worshipping.
