Surah Yasin (chapter 36) is about the truth of the Prophet's ﷺ message, the signs of Allah in nature, and life after death. It has 83 verses, was revealed in Makkah, and is one of the most loved and widely recited surahs in the Muslim world.

The basics

  • Name: from its first two letters, Ya and Sin. Like other "separate letters" at the start of surahs, their exact meaning is known to Allah.
  • Place: chapter 36, in the 22nd and 23rd juz.
  • Length: 83 verses; about 15–20 minutes to read slowly.
  • Period: Makkan, so it focuses on belief rather than detailed laws.

The four main parts

1. The message (verses 1–12). Allah swears by "the wise Quran" that Muhammad ﷺ is truly a messenger on a straight path. It ends by reminding us that every deed, and the traces we leave behind, is recorded.

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْىِ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ وَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُوا۟ وَءَاثَـٰرَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُ فِىٓ إِمَامٍ مُّبِينٍ "Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind, and all things We have enumerated in a clear register." Quran 36:12

2. The people of the town (13–32). Messengers are sent to a town and rejected. A man comes running from the far end of the city to defend them, and is killed. He is told, "Enter Paradise," and his first wish is that his people knew how Allah had forgiven and honoured him (36:26–27). It's a moving story about courage and caring for people even when they hurt you.

3. Signs in nature (33–44). Dead earth brought back to life by rain, the night and day, the sun running its course, the moon's phases, and ships on the sea, all pointing to the Creator.

4. Resurrection and judgment (45–83). Scenes of the Last Day, when mouths are sealed and hands and feet speak (36:65), and Paradise, where believers relax in the shade. A man holds up an old bone and asks who can give it life; Allah answers that the One who created it the first time will revive it (36:78–79). The surah ends: "His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, 'Be,' and it is" (36:82).

"The heart of the Quran"?

A popular narration calls Yasin "the heart of the Quran", but many hadith scholars consider it weak, and the same goes for most reports on reading it for the dying. Reciting Yasin is still good, like reciting any part of the Quran, but it isn't required at funerals. See Do I have to read Surah Yasin for the dead?

Key points
  • Surah Yasin is chapter 36, a Makkan surah of 83 verses.
  • Its themes: the Prophet's ﷺ message, the man who came running, signs in nature and resurrection.
  • It ends with "Be, and it is" (36:82).
  • Narrations on its special virtues are mostly weak; reciting it is still rewarding.
Tip: Read Yasin with a translation once a week for a month; the stories will stick quickly. Even if you don't understand all the Arabic yet, you're rewarded. See Is reciting the Quran rewarded if I don't understand it?
