What is taqwa?

Taqwa is a deep awareness of Allah that makes you do what pleases Him and avoid what displeases Him. It is often translated as "God-consciousness" or "mindfulness of Allah". The Arabic root suggests protection, like a shield you put between yourself and harm. It lives in the heart and shows in your actions.
What taqwa means
Taqwa blends love, respect and a healthy caution. A person with taqwa remembers that Allah sees everything, so they try to obey Him in public and in private. It is not constant fear or anxiety. It is more like how you would behave if you knew an esteemed and loving person was watching. The Quran connects it to a way out of difficulty and unexpected help:
Where taqwa lives
The Prophet ﷺ pointed to his chest three times and said, "The piety (taqwa) is here" (Sahih Muslim 2564). Taqwa starts in the heart, but it does not stay there. It appears in honest dealing, kind speech, prayer, avoiding what is forbidden and forgiving others.
Why it matters so much
- It is what makes a person honoured: "Surely the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you" (Quran 49:13).
- It is the best provision: "Take necessary provisions for the journey, surely the best provision is righteousness" (Quran 2:197).
- It is the aim of worship: fasting is prescribed "so perhaps you will become mindful of Allah" (Quran 2:183).
The Prophet's advice
Abu Dharr reported that the Prophet ﷺ told him: "Have taqwa of Allah wherever you are, and follow an evil deed with a good one to wipe it out, and treat the people with good behavior" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1987). This sums up three parts of taqwa: awareness of Allah, repentance and good character.
Practical ways to build it
- Pray on time and try to be present in your prayers.
- Remember Allah during the day with short dhikr. See What is dhikr and how do I start?
- Avoid small sins, not just big ones, and follow every slip with something good.
- Think before you speak, especially online.
- Read the Quran with meaning, even a few lines a day.
- Take a short account of yourself each night: what went well, what to improve.
- Keep good company that reminds you of Allah.
Taqwa links to the idea of worshipping as if you see Allah. See What is ihsan in Islam? If your iman feels low, see Why does my iman go up and down?
- Taqwa is God-consciousness: acting with awareness that Allah sees you.
- It lives in the heart and shows in actions (Sahih Muslim 2564).
- It is the real measure of honour before Allah (Quran 49:13).
- Build it with prayer, dhikr, Quran, avoiding sins and good company.
