The Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Ard) is a creature that Allah will bring out near the end of time as one of the major signs of the Day of Judgement. The Quran says it will speak to people. Its exact shape isn't described in authentic sources, so Muslims believe in it without guessing the details.

The verse in the Quran

The Beast is mentioned in Surah an-Naml:

وَإِذَا وَقَعَ ٱلْقَوْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَخْرَجْنَا لَهُمْ دَآبَّةً مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ تُكَلِّمُهُمْ أَنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ كَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا لَا يُوقِنُونَ "And when the word befalls them, We will bring forth for them a creature from the earth speaking to them, that the people were, of Our verses, not certain." Quran 27:82

"When the word befalls them" is understood as the time when Allah's promise of the end is about to come true. The Beast speaking to people is a sign that the truth they used to doubt is now in front of them.

What the hadith add

  • A major sign: the Prophet ﷺ listed ten major signs before the Hour, including the smoke, the Dajjal, the Beast, the sun rising from the west, the descent of Jesus son of Mary, and Gog and Magog (Sahih Muslim 2901).
  • One of the first: he said the first of the signs to appear will be the sun rising from the west and the Beast coming out to the people in the forenoon, and whichever comes first, the other will follow soon after (Sahih Muslim 2941).
  • Separating people: other narrations say the Beast will mark believers and disbelievers so they can be told apart. Scholars accept the general meaning, though these reports are weaker than the ones above.

What does it look like?

You may find detailed descriptions online: a mix of animals, a huge size, carrying Moses's staff and Solomon's ring. These come mostly from weak reports or later stories, and scholars differ on where exactly it will emerge. The safest position, held by many scholars, is to believe what the Quran and authentic hadith say and leave the rest to Allah. It's not a cartoon monster; it's a sign.

Why this matters now

The signs of the Hour aren't meant to scare people or to start predicting dates. The Quran points to the lesson: the Beast confronts people who weren't sure about Allah's verses. Once the major signs appear, the time for repentance is closing, so the real point is to be certain and act on faith today. See What is the Day of Judgement in Islam?
