What is the best time to exercise in Ramadan?

In most cases, the best time is one to two hours after iftar. You have had water and food, so you can train harder and recover well. A light session shortly before iftar is the second choice, and training after suhoor is usually the hardest, because the whole day without water is still ahead. Choose what is safe for you and never let a workout delay a prayer.

Option 1: after iftar (best for most)

  • Good: you are fed and hydrated, so you can lift heavy, run or do intervals.
  • Watch out for: Maghrib, Isha and taraweeh. Eat a normal meal, wait about an hour, and try to finish a couple of hours before bed so your sleep is not ruined.
  • Bonus: walking to the mosque for taraweeh adds gentle movement.

Option 2: shortly before iftar

  • Good: you can drink and eat soon after, so recovery starts quickly.
  • Watch out for: this is when your energy and hydration are lowest. Keep it light: a walk, mobility work, easy cardio or light weights for 20 to 40 minutes.
  • Remember: the fast lasts until sunset, so don't sip from your bottle out of habit.
ثُمَّ أَتِمُّوا۟ ٱلصِّيَامَ إِلَى ٱلَّيْلِ "then complete the fast until nightfall" Quran 2:187

Break your fast promptly when the time comes. The Prophet ﷺ said, "The people will remain on the right path as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1957). Have dates and water, pray, and then train later if you plan to.

Option 3: after suhoor

  • Good: you have just eaten and drunk, and mornings can be cooler.
  • Watch out for: you will sweat out water you cannot replace until sunset, and it can cut into sleep. Keep it gentle and short.
  • Don't forget: Fajr prayer comes first. Pray on time before you start.

Whichever you choose

  • Prayer first. Allah says that prayers are "a duty on the believers at the appointed times" (Quran 4:103). Plan your session around them, not over them.
  • Turn the volume down. Ramadan is for maintaining fitness, not for personal records.
  • Skip the heat. In long summer fasts, avoid training outdoors in the middle of the day.
  • Know when to stop. If you feel faint or unwell, stop. See Can I break my fast if I get dizzy during exercise?

Key points
  • After iftar is best for harder training.
  • Before iftar works for light, short sessions.
  • After suhoor is possible but usually the toughest on hydration.
  • Pray on time, keep it lighter than usual and stop if unwell.
Tip: Try each time slot for three days and note your energy, thirst and sleep. Your own notes will show you your best window.
