Fard prayers are obligatory: the five daily prayers that every adult Muslim must pray. Sunnah prayers are extra prayers the Prophet ﷺ used to pray; they earn great reward, but you don't sin by leaving them. As a new Muslim, focus on the fard first, then add sunnah prayers step by step.

Fard: the five obligatory prayers

Fard means obligatory. The five daily prayers are fard: Fajr (2 rakat), Dhuhr (4), Asr (4), Maghrib (3) and Isha (4). Jumu'ah on Friday replaces Dhuhr for men. Missing a fard prayer without a valid reason is a sin, and a missed one has to be made up.

A man once asked the Prophet ﷺ what Allah had made obligatory. He named the five prayers. The man asked, "Is there anything else on me?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "No, unless you do something voluntarily" (Sahih al-Bukhari 46). See How many times a day do Muslims pray?

Sunnah: the extra prayers

Sunnah (or nafl, voluntary) prayers are the ones the Prophet ﷺ prayed beyond the fard. The most important are the regular ones linked to the daily prayers, called rawatib. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever prays twelve voluntary rakat every day, Allah builds for them a house in Paradise (Sahih Muslim 728). They are commonly counted as:

  • 2 before Fajr (the most emphasized of all)
  • 4 before Dhuhr and 2 after it
  • 2 after Maghrib
  • 2 after Isha

He said the two rakat before Fajr are better than the world and everything in it (Sahih Muslim 725). Other sunnah prayers include witr, Duha, tahajjud and taraweeh.

Why sunnah prayers matter

In a hadith qudsi, Allah says that His servant keeps coming closer to Him through voluntary deeds until He loves him (Sahih al-Bukhari 6502). Scholars also explain that sunnah prayers patch up any gaps or lost focus in your fard prayers. They are like a safety net and a gift at the same time.

A note on terms

The Hanafi school adds a middle category, wajib (necessary), for witr: stronger than sunnah but below fard. The other schools call witr a strong sunnah. Scholars also split sunnah into "emphasized" (mu'akkadah), which the Prophet ﷺ rarely left, and "non-emphasized", which he prayed sometimes. When traveling, most scholars say you can drop the rawatib except the 2 before Fajr and witr. See What is qasr prayer?

Key points
  • Fard prayers are the five daily prayers; they are obligatory.
  • Sunnah prayers are voluntary extras with big reward.
  • Twelve daily sunnah rakat earn a house in Paradise.
  • The two rakat before Fajr are the most emphasized sunnah.
Tip: Converts often burn out by doing everything at once. Get the five fard prayers steady first, then add the 2 before Fajr, then one sunnah at a time. See Do I have to pray five times a day right after becoming Muslim?
