What is the difference between Makkan and Madinan surahs?

What the labels mean

"Makkan" and "Madinan" describe when a surah was revealed, not only where. Revelation lasted about 23 years, roughly 13 before the Hijrah and 10 after. A surah revealed after the Hijrah is called Madinan even if it came down while the Prophet ﷺ was travelling. A common list counts 86 Makkan and 28 Madinan surahs, but scholars differ about a few of them. Most printed Qurans and apps label each surah at its heading.

Makkan surahs

In Makkah the Muslims were a small, pressured community, so the revelation built belief first. Typical themes are:

• The oneness of Allah and the truth of the Prophet's ﷺ message.
• Paradise, Hell, the Day of Judgement and accountability.
• Stories of earlier prophets as comfort and warning.
• Short, rhythmic verses with a strong, direct tone.

Aisha explained the order: "The first thing that was revealed thereof was a Sura from Al-Mufassal [the shorter surahs near the end of the Quran], and in it was mentioned Paradise and the Fire. When the people embraced Islam, the verses regarding legal and illegal things were revealed" (Sahih al-Bukhari 4993). She added that if the first thing revealed had been a ban on alcohol or adultery, people would have said they would never give those things up.

Madinan surahs

In Madinah the Muslims became a community with a society to run. The revelation now included practical guidance:

• Rules for prayer, fasting, charity and Hajj.
• Marriage, divorce, inheritance and trade.
• Dealing with the People of the Book, treaties and the hypocrites.
• Rules about defending the community.
• Longer verses that explain details.

Why the difference helps when reading

• Context: a verse about patience under persecution reads differently from one about running a community.
• Practice: Madinan surahs hold most of the detailed laws, while Makkan surahs hold the foundations of belief.
• Difficult verses: knowing the setting often prevents misunderstanding.
