What is the difference between the Quran and hadith?

Mostly it comes down to source and wording. The Quran is the word of Allah, revealed to the Prophet ﷺ and recorded word for word. Hadith are reports of what the Prophet ﷺ said, did and approved, passed down by chains of narrators. Muslims follow both: the Quran is the foundation, and the hadith explain and apply it.

The Quran

  • Source: Allah's own words, revealed through the angel Jibril over about 23 years.
  • Wording: the exact Arabic words are preserved, and Muslims recite them in prayer.
  • Transmission: written down during the Prophet's ﷺ lifetime and memorized by many Companions, so it reached us through huge numbers of people.
  • Status: its authenticity is not graded, because every word is established.

The hadith

  • Source: the sayings, actions, approvals and descriptions of the Prophet ﷺ, as reported by his Companions and later narrators.
  • Wording: often the exact words, but in many reports the narrators passed on the meaning in their own words.
  • Transmission: each report comes with a chain of narrators (isnad). Scholars studied the narrators and graded reports, such as sahih (sound), hasan (good) or da'if (weak).
  • Collections: famous books include Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

There is also a category called hadith qudsi, where the Prophet ﷺ reports something Allah said but in the Prophet's own words. It is not part of the Quran and isn't recited as the Quran in prayer. See What is a hadith?

How they work together

The Quran gives the principles, and the hadith show how to apply them. For example, the Quran commands prayer, but the details of how to pray come from the Prophet's ﷺ example. Allah says the Prophet ﷺ was sent to explain the message:

وَأَنزَلْنَآ إِلَيْكَ ٱلذِّكْرَ لِتُبَيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ مَا نُزِّلَ إِلَيْهِمْ "And We have sent down to you [O Prophet] the Reminder, so that you may explain to people what has been revealed for them." Quran 16:44

Other verses say: "Whoever obeys the Messenger has truly obeyed Allah" (Quran 4:80), and "Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it. And whatever he forbids you from, leave it" (Quran 59:7). That is why mainstream Muslims accept authentic hadith as a source of guidance, alongside the Quran.

Why the difference matters

If a hadith seems to conflict with the clear meaning of the Quran, scholars look closely at its authenticity and meaning, since the Quran is the highest authority.

Not every hadith found online is authentic, so it is wise to check before you share. See Do I need to check a hadith before sharing it online?

The same care applies to the Quran: a translation explains its meaning but is not the Quran itself. See Is a Quran translation still the Quran? See Who wrote the Quran?

Key points
  • The Quran is Allah's word, preserved word for word; hadith are reports about the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Hadith are graded by authenticity, while the Quran is not.
  • Hadith explain and apply the Quran's teachings (Quran 16:44).
  • Mainstream Muslims follow both, with the Quran as the foundation.
Tip: When you start learning, read the Quran for the big picture, and use a trusted collection or a scholar's explanation for the practical details, such as how to pray.
