What is the purpose of life in Islam?

In Islam, the purpose of life is to know and worship Allah, and to live well on earth so you are ready for the next life. Worship here means much more than prayer. It covers your honesty, kindness, work and family life, whenever you do them for Allah's sake. This life is a short test, and the afterlife is the real home.
To worship Allah
The Quran states the purpose directly:
Allah does not need our worship. It is we who need it, because it gives life direction, calm and meaning. Worship includes the five daily prayers, fasting and charity, but it also includes honest work, caring for parents and smiling at a neighbour when you do these things with a sincere intention. The Quran says, "my prayer, my worship, my life, and my death are all for Allah" (Quran 6:162). See Does Allah care about my grades?
To know Allah
You cannot truly worship someone you do not know. Islam invites us to learn about Allah through the Quran, through His names and through the world around us. Many scholars see this knowledge and love of Allah as the heart of the purpose. See What is tawhid in Islam?
To take care of the earth and people
Allah told the angels, "I am going to place a successive human authority on earth" (Quran 2:30). This idea is often called khalifah (steward or successor). Humans are trusted to be fair, to build and not to spread corruption. A meaningful life in Islam therefore includes serving others and protecting what Allah created.
To prepare for the afterlife
The Quran says death and life were created "in order to test which of you is best in deeds" (Quran 67:2). That means life is not about getting the most, but about doing the best. The Prophet ﷺ once took hold of Ibn Umar's shoulder and said, "Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6416). A traveler enjoys the journey, but keeps their eyes on the destination.
What this looks like day to day
- Pray on time, even when your schedule is busy.
- Be honest and kind in work, school and family life.
- Enjoy halal pleasures with gratitude. Islam does not ask you to avoid joy.
- Seek knowledge and help people around you.
- Return to Allah quickly when you slip.
- Life exists to know and worship Allah (Quran 51:56).
- Worship covers all of life when done with the right intention.
- Humans are stewards of the earth and are asked to do good.
- This world is a test, and the afterlife is the lasting home.
