What is the tree of Tuba in Jannah?

"Tuba" is a word the Quran uses for the bliss of believers, and some reports describe a great tree of that name in Paradise. The clearest authentic hadith speaks of a tree in Paradise so large that a rider could travel in its shade for a hundred years. Beyond that, details are limited, and only Allah knows more.
The word "Tuba" in the Quran
The Quran says that those who believe and do good will receive "Tuba," a word that scholars translate as bliss, blessedness or a good state:
So at its root, Tuba means happiness and blessing. Some commentators say it is also the name of a particular tree in Paradise, based on reports outside the six main hadith books. Scholars grade those reports differently, so it is best to treat that as a view held by some, not as something settled.
The great tree in the hadith
The authentic hadith do not use the name Tuba, but they speak of a very large tree. The Prophet ﷺ said, "There is a tree in Paradise so big that a rider could travel in its shade for a hundred years" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3252). The same hadith appears in Sahih Muslim 2826. He added that if you wish, you could recite the verse about "extended shade" (Quran 56:30).
Some scholars link this tree with Tuba, while others say they are separate. Because the hadith does not say, we should not insist either way. What we can safely say is that Paradise has shade of enormous size, and that this is part of its comfort.
Tuba in the saying about strangers
The Prophet ﷺ also said: "Islam began as something strange and it will return to being strange as it began. So Tuba is for the strangers" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2629). Here, Tuba means blessing and good news for people who hold to Islam when it feels unfamiliar. Many converts in Europe and the USA find comfort in this, especially when they feel alone in their faith. See How do I deal with loneliness as a new Muslim?
What should we take from this?
The point of these descriptions is to inspire hope, not to give us a map. Jannah is described in terms we can understand, such as shade, water and fruit, but its true reality is beyond our imagination. See What is Jannah? and What are the rivers of Jannah?
- Tuba in the Quran means bliss and blessing for believers (Quran 13:29).
