What language will people speak in Jannah?

No verse or hadith in the major collections says which language people will speak in Jannah, so only Allah knows. A narration saying it will be Arabic is sometimes quoted, but hadith scholars generally consider it weak. What the Quran does tell us is that speech in Jannah will be pure, with no idle talk, only greetings of peace.

What the Quran says about languages

The Quran treats the variety of human languages as a sign of Allah's power, not a problem to be erased:

وَمِنْ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ خَلْقُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱخْتِلَـٰفُ أَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَأَلْوَٰنِكُمْ "And one of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the diversity of your languages and colours." Quran 30:22

It also says that every messenger was sent in the language of his own people, so that the message would be clear to them (Quran 14:4). Nothing in these verses links a particular language to the next life.

The narration about Arabic

Some people quote a narration that says the language of the people of Paradise is Arabic. This report is not found in the six main hadith collections, and many hadith scholars grade it weak. Because of that, we cannot build a firm belief on it.

Scholars therefore differ. Some say Arabic is likely, given that the Quran is in Arabic. Others say we should not claim what has not been established, and that Allah knows best. Either way, it is not something a Muslim needs to know to be saved.

What we do know about speech in Jannah

The Quran describes the speaking and listening of Paradise as free from the faults of this world:

لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا إِلَّا سَلَـٰمًا "There they will never hear any idle talk—only [greetings of] peace." Quran 19:62

So there will be no gossip, backbiting, lies or arguments. Everyone will speak and hear what is good. Another verse says people will "never hear any idle or sinful talk" (Quran 56:25). Whatever language it turns out to be, Jannah is described as a place free of hardship, so there is no reason to worry about it.

Should this worry a convert?

No. You do not need to master Arabic to enter Jannah, to be a Muslim or to be rewarded for your worship. You can say your shahada in your own language, and Allah knows what is in your heart. See Do I need to learn Arabic before I become Muslim? Learning some Arabic helps you to pray and to read the Quran in its original form, but it is a journey. Key points
  • No Quranic verse or major hadith names the language of Jannah.
  • The narration about Arabic is weak, so scholars treat it with caution.
  • Speech in Jannah will be free of idle talk, with only greetings of peace (Quran 19:62).
  • You do not need Arabic to be a Muslim or to enter Jannah.
Tip: If you are learning Arabic, start small: learn the meanings of the words you recite in prayer, one short surah at a time. It is more motivating than studying grammar rules in isolation.
