You can usually ask your university for prayer space, short prayer breaks, exam changes for Eid, halal food options and reasonable dress arrangements. Most universities in the UK, Europe and the USA have policies for this. Ask early, politely and in writing.

Islam makes things easy

Islam doesn't ask you to do the impossible, and asking for reasonable help so you can practise is completely fine.

لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا "Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity." Quran 2:286

The Prophet ﷺ told his companions, "Make things easy and do not make them difficult" (Sahih al-Bukhari 69). Many university staff share that spirit; they just need to know what you need.

Common accommodations to ask for

  • A prayer or quiet room. Most campuses have a multi-faith room. If yours doesn't, ask for one. See How do I pray at school or university?
  • Prayer breaks. A few minutes during long labs, workshops or exams. See Can I ask my professor for a prayer break during exams?
  • Jumu'ah. Permission to leave a Friday lecture early or catch up on the material.
  • Eid and exam dates. Many universities move exams for major religious holidays if you ask in advance. See Can I ask for exam dates to be moved for Eid?
  • Ramadan. Flexibility on evening events, or a place to break your fast during late classes.
  • Food. Halal or vegetarian options in catered halls and on meal plans.
  • Dress and ID. Hijab-friendly lab gear, sports kit, or a female staff member for face checks.

Your rights

In the UK, the Equality Act 2010 protects religion or belief, so universities must avoid discriminating and should consider reasonable requests. In the USA, many universities have written religious accommodation policies, and several states require schools to accommodate religious holidays. Across Europe, rules vary by country, but most universities have an equality or diversity office. Look for "religious observance policy" on your university's website.

How to ask

  • Ask as early as possible, ideally at the start of term.
  • Email the lecturer or the student services office, and keep it short and polite.
  • Explain what you need and offer solutions, such as sitting the exam at another time.
  • If you are refused, contact the equality office or your students' union.
Key points
  • Asking for help to practise your faith is normal and allowed.
  • Prayer space, breaks, Eid dates and halal food are common requests.
  • Equality laws and university policies usually support you.
  • Ask early, in writing, and offer practical solutions.
Tip: Your Muslim Student Association has likely asked for these things before. Ask them which office to contact and what has worked in past years.
