What should I wear on Eid as a Muslim?

Yes, Islam encourages you to wear your best clothes on Eid, as long as they're modest. They don't have to be new, expensive or from a Muslim culture. Clean, smart, modest clothes you feel good in are exactly right, whether that's a suit, a nice dress with a hijab, a thobe or a shalwar kameez.
Dressing up is part of the sunnah
When Umar bought a cloak and suggested the Prophet ﷺ "adorn yourself with it during the 'Id and when the delegations visit you," the Prophet ﷺ declined only because it was silk (Sahih al-Bukhari 948). The idea of dressing up for Eid was taken for granted.
The Prophet ﷺ also said that Allah loves to see the results of His favors on His servants (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2819), and when a man asked about loving fine clothes and shoes, he ﷺ said, "Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace" (Sahih Muslim 91). Looking nice is not vanity; arrogance is.
For men
- Any smart outfit works: a shirt and trousers, a suit, or a thobe or kurta if you like them.
- No silk or gold: silk and gold were made unlawful for men and lawful for women (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1720). Watch for silk ties and gold cufflinks. See Can Muslim men wear gold rings?
- Cover from navel to knee and pick trousers you can pray in comfortably.
- Perfume is a sunnah for men on Eid.
For women
- Festive and modest: long, loose clothes and a hijab when outside or with non-mahram men. Colors, embroidery and pretty fabrics are welcome. See Can Muslim women wear bright colors?
- At home or with women only, you can dress up more freely, with jewelry and makeup.
- Perfume is best kept for home and all-female gatherings. See Can Muslim women wear perfume in public?
Do I need "Muslim" clothes?
No. A thobe, abaya, kaftan or shalwar kameez is a cultural style, not a religious requirement. Many converts enjoy wearing one as a gift from friends, and that's lovely, but a well-fitting Western outfit is just as Islamic if it's modest. Choose shoes you can slip off at the prayer area, and bring a layer if the prayer is outdoors on a cold morning.
- Wear your best, cleanest clothes on Eid.
- Modesty rules still apply, especially outside.
- Men avoid silk and gold; women keep perfume for home.
- Cultural outfits are optional, not required.
