What should I wear to a job interview as a Muslim man?

In most cases, a smart, clean and modest outfit is all you need. A suit, or a good shirt and trousers, a neat beard and no gold or silk will fit almost any interview. The two awkward points, ties and handshakes, both have easy answers.
Dress for the job
Check what people wear at the company, then dress one level smarter. For an office or a bank, that means a suit or blazer. For a casual workplace, a pressed shirt and chinos are enough. Cleanliness matters too. The Prophet ﷺ once noticed a man in dirty clothes and asked whether he could not find something to wash them with (Sunan Abi Dawud 4062). Ironed, clean clothes and polished shoes show care. Choose a cut that is not tight, and cover the navel to the knee even when you sit. See Can I wear hijab to a job interview?
Ties and fabrics
Wearing a tie is not haram according to most contemporary scholars. Look at the fabric instead. Real silk ties are not allowed for men, while polyester, wool, cotton and knit ties look professional and are fine. Skip gold cufflinks, rings and watches. A steel or leather watch is the easy choice. See Is wearing a tie haram?
Beard and grooming
A neat, trimmed beard fits almost every interview in Europe and the USA, and you do not need to shave it off to look professional. Keep it clean and tidy, and use an alcohol-free scent or none. If a job truly requires a shaved face for safety equipment, ask a trusted imam about your situation. See Can I shave my beard for a job as a Muslim?
The handshake
With men, a firm, friendly handshake is fine. With a woman, scholars differ. Aisha reported that the Prophet's ﷺ hand never touched the hand of any woman when she pledged allegiance to him (Sahih al-Bukhari 4891). Most scholars therefore say not to shake hands with unrelated women, while a minority of contemporary scholars allow a brief handshake when refusing would cause real harm. If you decline, put your right hand on your chest, smile and say, "Lovely to meet you. I don't shake hands for religious reasons, but I'm glad to be here." Most interviewers respect this. Prayer and timing
If you can, schedule the interview so it does not clash with a prayer time, and pray beforehand. You are not obliged to mention your faith in the interview, and a calm, confident manner counts for more than any outfit. Arrive early, switch off your phone and keep your answers honest.
- Dress clean, smart and modest, one level above the workplace.
- Ties are fine, but avoid real silk and gold accessories.
- A neat beard suits most interviews.
- Decline a handshake politely with a hand on your chest if you follow the majority view.
