In most cases, a neat, modest smart-casual outfit makes the best impression. Think of a collared shirt, dark trousers and clean shoes, as you would wear to an important job interview. Skip gold, silk and loud slogans, and let your manners do most of the talking.

Why it matters

A first meeting with her family is a moment of respect. Islam welcomes looking good, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves grace" (Sahih Muslim 91). The same hadith warns that pride is disdaining the truth and looking down on people, so aim to look tidy and dignified, not showy. He also noticed a man in dirty clothes and asked whether he could not find something to wash them with (Sunan Abi Dawud 4062). Clean, ironed clothes are a sign of care.

What to wear

  • Shirt: a collared or button-up shirt, ironed. Long or short sleeves are both fine, though long sleeves often look more formal.
  • Trousers: chinos or smart trousers in navy, gray, black or beige. Avoid ripped jeans, shorts and very tight cuts.
  • Jacket: a blazer or smart jacket is a nice touch, but a tie is optional. Many families will not expect one.
  • Shoes and socks: clean, polished shoes and socks without holes. Many families ask guests to remove shoes at the door.

If her family is Arab, Pakistani, Turkish or from elsewhere, a kurta or thobe can show respect, but only if you are comfortable in it. See Can Muslim men wear a thobe in the West?

What to avoid

  • Gold and silk: no gold chains or rings, and no real silk tie.
  • Loud logos and slogans: band shirts, jokes and big brand names send the wrong message.
  • Sportswear: tracksuits and football shirts look too casual.
  • Strong cologne: use a light scent or none.

Real silk ties are a common surprise, since many ties are silk. See Can Muslim men wear silk ties?

For fragrance, an alcohol-free scent is the safest choice. See Is perfume with alcohol haram?

Manners matter more than clothes

A calm greeting of salam, eye contact with the men, a warm smile and being on time all count more than your outfit. Keep your beard and hair tidy, turn your phone off, and bring a small gift such as dates, sweets or flowers.

Some of the women may not shake hands, so wait for them to offer, and put a hand on your chest as a friendly alternative. See Can I still shake hands with the opposite sex as a Muslim?

If the visit overlaps a prayer time, pray beforehand or ask politely for a quiet place. Families usually respect this and take it as a sign of sincerity.

Key points
  • Dress smart, modest and clean, not flashy.
  • A collared shirt, dark trousers and clean shoes work for most families.
  • Avoid gold, silk, loud slogans and strong cologne.
  • Good manners count for more than the outfit.
Tip: Ask your parents, a friend or the person arranging the meeting what the family usually wears. A short, honest question like that is always welcome.
