Jumu'ah prayer is held at Dhuhr time on Friday, just after the sun passes its highest point at midday. In practice, most mosques in the UK, Europe and the USA start the khutbah between about 12:15 and 1:45 pm, depending on the season and the mosque. Always check your local mosque's timetable.

The basic rule: Dhuhr time

Jumu'ah replaces the Dhuhr prayer on Friday, so it has the same time window: from when the sun passes its zenith (called zawal) until the time for Asr begins. Anas ibn Malik said the Prophet ﷺ used to pray Jumu'ah when the sun had started to decline from the middle of the sky (Sahih al-Bukhari 904).

The Hanafi, Maliki and Shafi'i schools say it cannot be prayed before midday. The Hanbali school allows it a little earlier, before zawal, based on some reports from the Companions, but the Hanbalis also say praying after zawal is better and safer.

إِذَا نُودِىَ لِلصَّلَوٰةِ مِن يَوْمِ ٱلْجُمُعَةِ فَٱسْعَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ وَذَرُوا۟ ٱلْبَيْعَ "When [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah, then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade." Quran 62:9

Why the time changes through the year

Solar noon moves with the seasons and with daylight saving time. In London it falls around 12:00 in winter and around 1:00 pm in summer, so many UK and European mosques move Jumu'ah by an hour when the clocks change. In the USA, many mosques simply use a fixed time like 1:15 or 1:30 pm, which stays safely inside the Dhuhr window all year.

Khutbah time vs prayer time

Mosque timetables often list two times. The first is when the khutbah (sermon) starts, and the second is when the two rak'ahs begin, usually 20 to 40 minutes later. If you want the full reward, aim for the first time, or even earlier. Arriving after the second time means you may miss the prayer. See How many rakat is Jumu'ah prayer?

Several Jumu'ahs in one day

Busy city mosques and university prayer rooms often run two or three "shifts", for example 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30. This helps people with short lunch breaks. If your work or classes clash, talk to your employer early. See Is Friday prayer compulsory? and Can I miss Friday prayer because of a lecture?
