What will we eat in Jannah?

In Jannah, people will eat fruit of every kind, the meat of birds, and whatever else they desire, and drink from rivers of water, milk, honey and a wine that doesn't intoxicate. The food is pure joy: no hunger, no allergies, no waste, and no limits.

Whatever you wish for

The Quran describes the people of Paradise choosing freely from what is offered:

وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ "And the meat of fowl, from whatever they desire." Quran 56:21

The verse just before it mentions "fruit of what they select" (Quran 56:20). Elsewhere the Quran speaks of fruits that are always in season and never out of reach, and of people saying, "This is what we were given before," because the fruit looks familiar but tastes far better.

The four rivers

فِيهَآ أَنْهَـٰرٌ مِّن مَّآءٍ غَيْرِ ءَاسِنٍ وَأَنْهَـٰرٌ مِّن لَّبَنٍ لَّمْ يَتَغَيَّرْ طَعْمُهُۥ وَأَنْهَـٰرٌ مِّنْ خَمْرٍ لَّذَّةٍ لِّلشَّـٰرِبِينَ وَأَنْهَـٰرٌ مِّنْ عَسَلٍ مُّصَفًّى "In it are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey." Quran 47:15

The wine of Paradise is not like the wine of this world. The Quran says it causes no headache and no loss of the mind (Quran 56:19). If you gave up alcohol when you became Muslim, this is something to look forward to. See What can Muslims eat?

The first meal

When Abdullah ibn Salam, a Jewish scholar, tested the Prophet ﷺ with questions, one was about the first food of the people of Paradise. The Prophet ﷺ said it would be the extra lobe of the liver of a fish (Sahih al-Bukhari 3329). It's a small detail, but it shows that the feast is real and specific.

No hunger, no mess

People in Jannah eat and drink for pleasure, not because they need to. The Prophet ﷺ said they will eat and drink but won't spit, blow their noses or relieve themselves; their food leaves as a burp and sweat that smells like musk (Sahih Muslim 2835). No bloating, no dishes, no diets.

And there is no worry about halal or haram any more: everything there is good and permitted. See What is Jannah? and What are the levels of Jannah?

Key points
  • Fruit, bird meat and whatever people desire (Quran 56:20-21).
  • Rivers of water, milk, non-intoxicating wine and pure honey (Quran 47:15).
  • The first food is the extra lobe of a fish's liver (Sahih al-Bukhari 3329).
  • Eating there is pure pleasure, with no hunger or waste (Sahih Muslim 2835).
Tip: Next time you're hungry during a fast or skip something haram, tell yourself, "I'm saving room for Jannah." It turns a small sacrifice into a smile.
