When is ghusl required?

It depends on what happened: ghusl is required after a few specific things. These are sexual intercourse, ejaculation (awake or in a dream), the end of a period, and the end of bleeding after childbirth. A person who dies is also given ghusl by others. Other baths, like before Friday prayer or Eid, are recommended but not required.

The main reasons ghusl becomes required

  • Sexual intercourse: ghusl is required for both partners even without ejaculation. The Prophet ﷺ said that when a man has intercourse, bathing becomes obligatory, "even if there is no orgasm" (Sahih Muslim 348).
  • Ejaculation: any release of sexual fluid with pleasure, whether awake or asleep. The Prophet ﷺ said bathing becomes obligatory with seminal emission (Sahih Muslim 343). This applies to women too.
  • A wet dream: asked whether a woman must bathe after a wet dream, he said, "Yes, if she notices a discharge" (Sahih al-Bukhari 282). No fluid means no ghusl.
  • End of a period: he told a woman to stop praying during her period, and "when it has finished, take a bath and start praying" (Sahih al-Bukhari 320).
  • End of postpartum bleeding (nifas): scholars agree it's treated like a period.

Until you do ghusl, you can't pray, and most scholars say you shouldn't touch the Quran. See Do I have to pray while on my period?

وَلَا جُنُبًا إِلَّا عَابِرِى سَبِيلٍ حَتَّىٰ تَغْتَسِلُوا۟ "Nor when in a state of janabah, except those passing through [a place of prayer], until you have washed [your whole body]." Quran 4:43

After death

When a Muslim dies, the community washes the body. The Prophet ﷺ instructed the women washing his daughter to wash her "thrice or five times or more" with water and lote leaves (Sahih al-Bukhari 1253). This is a duty on the living, usually done by family or the mosque's funeral team.

New Muslims

Qays ibn Asim said that when he came to accept Islam, the Prophet ﷺ told him to bathe (Sunan Abi Dawud 355). The Hanbali school, and some Maliki scholars, say this ghusl is required for every new Muslim. The Hanafi and Shafi'i schools say it's recommended, unless you're already in a state that requires ghusl. Doing it is the easy, safe choice. See Do I have to shower after taking my shahada?

Recommended ghusl

  • Friday: "Anyone of you attending the Friday (prayers) should take a bath" (Sahih al-Bukhari 877). Most scholars call it a strong sunnah; a minority say it's required.
  • Eid: recommended by all four schools, following the practice of the Companions.
  • Entering ihram: for Hajj or Umrah.

Things like bleeding from a cut, using the toilet or sleeping only need wudu, not ghusl. See What breaks wudu?

Key points
  • Intercourse requires ghusl, even without ejaculation.
  • Ejaculation or a wet dream with fluid requires ghusl, for men and women.
  • Ghusl ends the state of a period or postpartum bleeding.
  • Friday and Eid ghusl are recommended, not required.
Tip: If you need ghusl, you can wait until before the next prayer. Just don't let a prayer time run out because you put off your shower.
