Enter the mosque with your right foot and leave with your left. This is a sunnah, not an obligation, so if you forget, your visit and prayer are completely fine. It's the opposite of the bathroom, where you enter with the left foot.

Why the right foot?

The Prophet ﷺ liked to start with the right side in everything good: putting on his shoes, combing his hair, purifying himself, and in all his affairs (Sahih al-Bukhari 168). Imam al-Bukhari also repeats this hadith in a chapter about starting with the right when entering the mosque, and he mentions that Ibn Umar used to step in with his right foot and out with his left. The Companion Anas ibn Malik also said that entering with the right foot and leaving with the left is part of the sunnah.

The general rule scholars take from this: honorable things start with the right (entering the mosque, eating, putting on clothes), and the opposite things start with the left (leaving the mosque, entering the bathroom, taking off shoes).

Step by step at the door

  • Take off your left shoe first, then your right, and step into the mosque with your right foot.
  • Say the dua for entering: Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik.
  • When you leave, step out with your left foot, then put on your right shoe first.
  • Say the leaving dua: Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik.

Shoes are the one place where it flips at the door: right shoe on first, left shoe off first, which matches the "right for honor" rule. See Can I pray with my shoes on?

What if I forget?

Nothing is wrong. Sunnahs like this bring reward when you do them, and there's no sin or need to walk back out if you forget. Busy doorways on Friday make it easy to step in with the wrong foot. Just carry on, find your place, and pray two rak'ahs if you have time. See What is tahiyyat al-masjid?

The bathroom is the opposite

Converts often mix these up. For the toilet, you enter with the left foot and leave with the right, saying the bathroom duas. See What dua do I say when entering the bathroom? A simple memory trick: right foot toward the better place.

Key points
  • Enter the mosque with the right foot, leave with the left.
  • It's a sunnah; forgetting it is not a sin.
  • The Prophet ﷺ liked to start good things with the right.
  • For the bathroom, it's the other way round.
Tip: Pair the foot with the dua. As your right foot crosses the doorway, say "Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik." Linking the two makes both easy to remember.
